Mexico Celebrates Whale Season With Mammoth Happy Hour
Edited by Sarah Wilman
January and February is whale
watching season. Every year between December and March humpbacked whales travel
to the Bay of Banderas, thirty miles south of Puerto Vallarta, to have their
babies.
To celebrate, Verana, a hotel atop Yelapa, is breaking out
the top shelf tequila. Names such as Jose Cuervo's Reserva de la Familia (each
bottle is numbered and dated) and Don Eduardo Anejo (aged in Jack Daniel's
barrels) will be standing by for nightly tastings at the bar. There is
tequila-spiked sauce on the dinner menu,
tequila in the facial treatments at the
spa and of course, tequila in the custom cocktails.
In the haze of all this tequila soaked excitement it the
whales might get forgotten. Fortunately, from anywhere on the Verana property it
is easy to spy a pod of the gracious mammals, as they cavort in the Bay of
Banderas below. Boat trips run out into the bay and alongside the whales there
have been sightings of dolphins, manta rays and sea turtles.
