Gourmet Fiction: Food as a Literary Theme

Edited by Madelyn Miller, the travellady

  • Love to read?

  • Love to eat?

  • Is culinary arts your specialty?

Great literature is like fine dining—food for the soul—to be savored, enjoyed, shared, and remembered. In this class you will sample the flavor and texture of poetry, short stories’ and novels from an extensive menu. You will read about childhood memories of food, feasts that enhance romance, recipes protected as closely guarded secrets, and characters who display true dedication to hospitality. (Sometimes spicy, sometimes sweet but never any calories!) The only prerequisite for this literature class is the desire to read.

Classes will be held at Building One at the UH West Hawai`i Center in Kealakekua.

The instructor for this class is Nancee Cline. Nancee earned a B.A. in English and an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Humanities with an emphasis in literature. She is a published essayist and book reviewer. She currently teaches English at Hawaii Community College in West Hawaii.
