TITAS Presents Jazz Vocalist Dianne Reeves
"Reeves' voice is an awesome instrument."
- People Magazine
TITAS continues its 2000-2001 Season of Dance & Music with one of the most distinguished vocalists in jazz today, Blue Note recording artist Dianne Reeves, for one night only, on Saturday, February 24, 2001 at 8 p.m. at McFarlin Auditorium. "Her three-plus, pellucid octaves, diva-like delivery and intimate sense of a song have long made her one of the most compelling vocalists in jazz." (Seattle Times)
With her strong, agile voice, rhythmic virtuosity, and improvisational ease, Dianne Reeves was clearly born of jazz. But music, she believes, should "have no boundaries", so her singing also draws upon a world of influences: Africa, Brazil, and the Caribbean; gospel and r&b; classic and contemporary pop. She has become one of the most significant and relevant singers to arise in the 90's, earning three Grammy Award nominations. On her impressive catalog of recordings, she has performed versions of songs by everyone from Peter Gabriel to Milton Nascimento. However, she is doing all she can to carry the torch of previous female legends such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Reeves' longtime idol, Sarah Vaughan (she just put the finishing touches on her ninth Blue Note release, entitled "The Calling: Celebrating Sarah Vaughan"). During her career, she has recorded and worked with a virtual who's-who of modern jazz giants including George Duke, Mulgrew Miller, Kenny Garrett, Joe Williams, Kenny Barron, and many others.
Backing Reeves up during this TITAS presentation will be Otmaro Ruiz (played with Herb Alpert, John McLaughlin) on keyboards, Munyungo Jackson (Miles Davis, Stanley Clarke, Gerald Albright), percussion, Reginald Veal (Terence Blanchard, Harry Connick Jr., Branford & Wynton Marsalis) on bass, and Greg Hutchinson (Betty Carter, Joe Henderson, Roy Hargrove) on drums. The program will include numbers from Reeves' recent live release "In the Moment", as well as pieces from her forthcoming "Celebrating Sarah Vaughan" album.
Tickets for Dianne Reeves are available at the TITAS Box Office, 3101 North Fitzhugh, Suite 301, Dallas, TX or by phoning 214-528-5576 or faxing 214-528-0126, at Albertson's stores, by calling 888-597-7827 (STAR), or at www.startickets.com.
