New British Airways Business Class
I Thought I Was In First Class
By Valerie Summers
Traveling as much as I do, it's the jet lag, more than anything else, that creates problems for me. Time is always short and as a travel writer, I must make the most of every minute. Arriving at an overseas destination, particularly in the early morning with a full agenda for the day often makes me wish I was at home sleeping soundly in my own bed. British Airways to the rescue! British Airways has redefined Business Class, making it closer and closer to the comforts and amenities which First Class passengers enjoy. Brand new for Club World passengers, a business class seat that transforms into a fully flat 6' bed. It was so comfortable, it was almost like being in my own bed. The more sleep Trans-Atlantic passengers can get, the quicker they will overcome jet-lag. As a recent business class traveler, I arrived fresh and alert having enjoyed a good night's sleep on one of BA's innovative new seat/beds.
The new seats are designed in forward and rearward facing pairs and are configured to create a lounge style environment. Each armchair-like seat, complete with footstool, converts to a flat bed at the touch of a button. So comfortable! The unique layout provided maximum personal space and privacy allowing me to work or relax, as I chose. But mostly, I slept.
British Airways is the first airline to offer a sleeper bed in business class. This revolutionary idea came about in response to consumer needs and studies showing the only way to achieve real quality sleep is on a flat bed. Jetlag is the biggest problem facing the flying public and British Airways offers sound advice to enhance travel time and wellness in the air. Studies from the National Sleep Foundation have found that two thirds of Americans fail to get sufficient sleep due in part of longer work hours and increased stress. Combine extended work hours with long distance travel and the result is an overworked and fatigued traveler who is unable to perform optimally. British Airways comfortable new seating provides the solution.
I also enjoyed the use of Club World's in-seat phones and laptop power ports, and a larger private video screen with a huge selection of in-flight entertainment.
The newly developed menu offered gourmet selections and included healthy dining options. BA also features pre-flight dining in select East Coast cities offering a variety of hot and cold dishes served buffet style. British Airways continues to enhance travel for their passengers with tips and opportunities for healthy traveling including eating a light meal before boarding so passengers can maximize sleep time.
BA's commitment to healthy travel includes tips that passengers in all flight classes would do well to heed.
- Help your body cope better when traveling to a new time zone by taking every opportunity to sleep en route.
- For any health concerns before traveling, refer to BA's web site at
www.britishairways.com/health
- Avoid heavy meals
- Drink lots of water
- Limit alcohol and caffeine intake
- Dress in loose, comfortable clothing
- Try not to sit too long
- Keep your skin moisturized
- Do simple exercises
- Don't cross your legs when sitting for hours
I put these tips to use and along with a good night's sleep, I hit the pavement running when I disembarked, ready for a full day of exploring.
