Love on the Run

Romance on the Rails and Sea

by Dave Shultz

There's something inherently romantic about travel.  Both train travel and sea cruises call to mind black and white images of stars like Bogey and Bacall, on their way to someplace exotic and sharing romance along the way.  If you want to live your own classic journey and inspire romantic images of your own, here are a couple of unforgettable journeys guaranteed to put anyone in the mood for love.

Verde Canyon Railroad

This classic train ride between two national forests adjacent to a wilderness area is Arizona's longest running nature show.  Originally this section of track between Clarkdale and Pekinsville only served about a dozen families but today, it runs year-round, serving train buffs and romantics alike.

What this ride lacks in length ( it's a four hour trip ) it makes up in scenic beauty.  The ride includes views of Sinagua Indian ruins, bald and golden eagles, waterfowl, wildlife and a 680-foot man-made tunnel, a perfect spot to steal a kiss or two!

There are lots of different packages available including weddings, honeymoons, anniversaries and overnight stays but if proposals are on your mind, there are two that really stand out.  They run a Valentine's Day special that includes champagne, appetizers and full service bar and the first class seating is Pullman-style with two seats on each side of the isle.  There is also a Starlight tour that runs at night, May through October.  Talk about wishing upon a star!

Once you get that all important "yes," this might even be the perfect spot for an intimate wedding.  The railroad is very accommodating to couples exchanging vows and loves hosting weddings.

Tahiti by Gauguin

The islands of French Polynesia may be the world's last natural paradise and the best way to explore them is aboard the m/s Paul Gauguin on a seven night voyage from Papeete, Tahiti.  This ship is small by cruise ship standards and offers an intimate luxury that is more open to the warm tropical breezes and beautiful vistas.

The dress code is definitely informal so forget the tux and with only 320 guests aboard, you won't get lost in the crowd.  All the staterooms and suites have sweeping ocean views and half of them offer private balconies or verandas.

The French sensibility to the finer enjoyments in life is most apparent in the galley.  Not only will you find a marvelous selection of French wine but there are three dining venues, each with a different style of cuisine. L'Etoile offers Parisian Pre-War elegance in a celestial setting, La Veranda is intimate but with floor to ceiling windows and Le Grille is an open air bistro-style setting next to the pool.

The Paul Gauguin offers the traditional cruise ship spa and fitness center as well as evening entertainment, gambling and shore excursions but it offers something else.  Mythical Islands embraced by the sea and the perfect atmosphere for lover's dreams to come true.
