The Historic Cavalier Hotel
Virginia Beach, Virginia
The Cavalier Hotel, built in 1927, quickly became the premiere hotel in Virginia Beach. Known as "The Aristocrat of Virginia's Shore," it attracted seven presidents from Coolidge to Nixon, along with various stars of the stage and screen. It was the nation's leading hostelry in the World during the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, with Bette Davis, Ginger Rogers, Bing Crosby, Betty Grable, and F. Scott Fitzgerald among the hotel's distinguished guests. The Cavalier's exclusive Beach Club was the world's largest hirer of big bands during this time period as well, with performers such as Benny Goodman, Cab Calloway, and Frank Sinatra gracing their oceanfront stage.
This illustrious hotel is still a main attraction in Virginia Beach, along with its historic oceanfront boardwalk, originally constructed in 1888 as the new-born resort grew in popularity. The city's rich history is apparent today in its quaint seaside attractions such as the Norwegian Lady, the Old Coast Guard Station and the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse. Visit the Cavalier Hotel website to learn more about the hotel and its fascinating history, as well as the official Virginia Beach website to check out "all kinds of fun" in Virginia Beach.
