TITAS Opens The 2001/2002 Dance Season With the Brenda Angiel Aerial Dance Company

"Swinging in midair with wit and magic." -The New York Times

TITAS opens the dance portion of its 2001/2002 Season of Dance & Music with Argentina's BRENDA ANGIEL AERIAL DANCE COMPANY, on Friday and Saturday, October 12 & 13, 2001 at 8 p.m. at McFarlin Auditorium. This incredibly unique troupe performs its entire program suspended in the air, producing an evening of dance that is "hauntingly beautiful and full of subtle surprises." (The New York Times)

Brenda Angiel, the founder and artistic director of the company, was born in Argentina in 1966 and began her dance training at age 11. In 1988 she went to New York to further her studies in all genres of dance and participated in workshops with the likes of Sankai Juku and Bill T. Jones. In 1991 she returned to Buenos Aires and began creating works that won her national acclaim and awards throughout her homeland. Since 1994, her choreography has been exclusively aerial in nature, allowing her to create her own dance vocabulary that leaves "audience members murmuring in awe and fascination." (Spectator)

The difference between aerial dance and acrobatic aerial work like Cirque de Soleil is that it follows the rules of dance - the suspended bodies create a discourse that is expressed and narrated from the motion itself. At the same time, it challenges the audience's perceptual processes as the dancers appear above them and in many areas of the stage untouched by traditional dance companies. However, none of the complicated rigging, ropes or machinery ever interferes with the emotional and human element of the performance. "The creative Argentine choreographer has taken modern dance into a new dimension." (The Herald Sun)

Tickets ($10-$52) for BRENDA ANGIEL are available at the TITAS Box Office, 3101 North Fitzhugh, Suite 301, Dallas, TX or by phoning 214-528-5576 or faxing 214-528-0126.

This special presentation of BRENDA ANGIEL is made possible through the generous support of The Dallas Morning News, KERA 90.1 FM, KERA TV, Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs, Circle R Group, and WFAA-TV.
