Hadong Mountain Dew Tea Cultural Festival

May 24-27, 2002

Hwagae-myeon, Hadong-gun, South Gyeongsang Province, along with Boseong-gun, South Jeolla Province, is the nation's most famous tea cultivation area.  In Unsu-ri, Hwagae-myeon, there is a site where tea was first cultivated under the king's order in 828 by Kim Dae-ryeom who had brought tea seeds from the Tang Dynasty in China.  This illustrates how the area was well suited for tea cultivation.

In Hadong-gun with a historical tradition of tea cultivation, the Mountain Dew Tea Cultural Festival is held every year.  Wild green tea in Hadong-gun is a traditional handmade tea and it has outstanding efficacy in improving eyesight, preventing cancer, diabetes, hypertension, removing hangovers and preventing the generation of dioxin.

The festival to be held on May 24-27 this year will showcase various events, including the annual best tea contest where the best teas are selected and sold; the "temple culture experience" where participants can enjoy a hands-on experience of traditional Buddhist culture; Buddhist music performance at Palyeongru of Ssanggyesa Temple built in 840.

Moreover, on May 27, "Tourist tea leaf picking contest" is held where tourists pick wild tea leaves and participate in the tea production process.
