Music on the Move

Mobile MP3’s

By Dave Shultz

If you travel very much, you spend a lot of time doing nothing.  Sitting in the airport terminal, sitting on the airplane, sitting in the cab…you get the picture.   One sure fire way to prevent terminal travel boredom is to have your favorite music to help you pass the time.  If you’re new to the MP3 music scene, you’re in for a treat.  MP3 is a form of music compression that reduces the size a song or album would take up in disk storage.  In other words, instead of getting one album to fit on a in a certain amount of space, you can get three with no noticeable loss of quality.

Now that you know all about MP3, you have to have a way to play it on the go.  That’s where TEAC’s MP-330 Mini CD/MP3 Player really shines.  It plays music recorded to a mini CD disc about 3” in diameter.  The discs are recordable in any CD-R device found as standard equipment in most computers today

The Musicmatch Jukebox software that comes with the player will allow you to “rip” your favorite CD’s into MP3 format.  You can record 210 minutes or about three albums worth of music on a single mini CD.  That’s a lot of traveling tunes on one little CD and at less than $1.50 per CD, a real bargain too.  Also, there are lots of sites on the Internet where you can download your favorite music if you don’t want to rip your own.

The player itself is very petite and can be carried in a shirt pocket but it comes with a carrying case that can be worn on a belt or attached to a strap with the Velcro flap on the back.  It exposes all the controls for easy access and even has a pouch to store the earbud headphones when not in use.

The player has a 40 second anti-shock device built in so anything short of  jogging up and down stairs keeps the music playing smoothly.  Another impressive feature is the Digital Sound Equalizer with presets for Normal, Jazz, Rock, and Classic music.  That should cover just about every taste.  There’s also a Bass Boost for really deep bass if you’re into Heavy Metal.

There are all types of in-ear headphones out there on the market but none sound better than the Sennheiser ones supplied with the player.  The sound is outstanding.  Nothing tinny or wimpy about these earbuds.

This is truly a device for the road warrior.  Compact but with the sound quality you’d expect from a CD player and there’s something irresistibly cute about the little mini CD’s you can carry around in your pocket.  If you travel, this CD/MP3 player won’t shorten the trip but it sure will make is seem shorter.
