Master Sommelier Andrea Immer
To Host 21st Annual Kapalua Wine & Food Festival
By Madelyn Miller
Master
Sommelier Andrea Immer will return to host the 21st annual
Kapalua Wine & Food Festival, Hawaii’s premier celebration of wine, food and
the good life. Set to take place from July 4-7, 2002, the four-day food and
wine extravaganza will bring together culinary and wine stars from around
the world for fun themed tastings, seminars and a gala dinner.
Author of GREAT WINE MADE SIMPLE: Straight Talk
from a Master Sommelier, Immer, 34, is one of the most prominent and
powerful people in the worldwide beverage industry. Awarded the title of
Master Sommelier from the Court of Master Sommelier, she is just one of 10
women in the world to hold this distinction. In addition, she has been
named Dean of Wine Studies for The French Culinary Institute in New York
City, where she recently graduated with honors from its renowned 600-hour
professional culinary program.
As the first Corporate Director of Beverage Programs
for Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Immer was responsible for launching one of
the most innovative and far-reaching wine education programs in the
industry. Prior to joining Starwood, Immer was Beverage Director for
Windows on the World—she now serves on the committee for the Windows of Hope
fund, which raises money for the food service employee families affected by
the September 11 World Trade Center disaster.
A regular contributor to publications such as
Esquire, Lodging/Food & Beverage magazine, and wine.com, Immer is currently
completing her next book, ANDREA IMMER’S WINE BUYING GUIDE FOR EVERYONE,
due out from Broadway Books in May 2002. Its publication corresponds with
the summer kick-off of the Kapalua Wine & Food Festival. “It’s perfect
timing,” says Immer. “The Festival is all about enjoying wine—and food, of
course—and the book is a review of the 350 most enjoyed wines available in
stores and restaurants.”
At this year’s Kapalua Wine & Food Festival, Immer
will share her no-nonsense approach to wine through seminars and tastings,
winemaker dinners, and signature events like the popular Grand Tasting and
Kapalua Seafood Festival. “Not only will the Festival feature wine and food
loved by most, but it will also introduce guests to some of the world’s most
hard-to-find boutique wines and small purveyors of artisinal foodstuffs,”
adds Immer. “A sense of adventure is a must, but the benchmarks of
tradition will also be thrown in the mix.”
Kapalua is a 1,650-acre master-planned resort
