A Cuisine Australia Can Call Its Own

By Madelyn Miller

Australia is blessed with a wonderful range of native fruits, nuts, berries, herbs, spices and vegetable crops.  Australian aborigines have relied upon these foods for many thousands of years.  The delicious flavours, colours and textures of these native ingredients are used in the creation of a truly-Australian national cuisine.

Native ingredients are exciting consumers around the world.  When chefs are presented with these new flavours for the first time, it has been likened to graphic artists being presented with “a palette of colours they have never seen before”.

By blending native ingredients with established international cuisines and adapting the best of both, a vibrant and uniquely Australian “fusion” cuisine is evolving.

The Australian Native Foods Industry is new and growing rapidly.  Currently there are many small, and some large food industry players offering native foods in their product ranges (e.g. McCormick, Goodman Fielder, Masterfoods and  Bushels).

Australian Native Produce Industries Pty Ltd

Australian Native Produce Industries Pty Ltd (ANPI) was formed in 1992 to pioneer the development of an Australian native cuisine.  It is an integrated producer, buyer, wholesaler, processor and marketer of native foods, comprising 3 divisions:

1)1)      Nursery Division (Murtho near Renmark, South Australia)

A modern wholesale production nursery occupying a 5 hectare site.  It is Australia’s only dedicated native food-plant nursery supplying high quality planting material to primary producers.  Great emphasis has been placed on securing licenses for superior genetic material from research agencies such as the CSIRO.

2)         Farming Division (Murtho)

A 100 ha farm is being developed, in stages, to grow native food crops.  All crops grown under intensive, irrigated conditions.  A full-time Industry Development Consultant coordinates and provides technical support to ANPI’s contracted group of growers Australia-wide.

3)         Marketing and Distribution Division (Adelaide)

Coordination of the contract manufacturing of ANPI’s retail and food services product ranges. Marketing, warehousing and distribution of raw and processed food products.

Success in the domestic and export markets has resulted in the company becoming one of the major players in the native foods industry.  ANPI’s vision includes developing a native cuisine that will become an established part of Australian culture.

Uniquely in the native food industry, ANPI has a strong focus on the mainstream commercial cultivation of a core range of native food crops.  This is supported through its research activities including the selection of superior genetic material, developing reliable plant propagation methods and establishing best-practice crop management, harvesting, post-harvest handling and transport systems.  The pursuit of industry best practice and HACCP quality systems are guiding principles for ANPI in all operations.

In addition to providing planting material from its nursery at Murtho, the company’s professional staff provides a range of technical support services to primary producers, including training courses, consulting and publications.  ANPI’s Web Site includes downloadable technical Fact Sheets that are jointly published with Primary Industries & Resources South Australia (PIRSA).

The Red Ochre™ Brand

ANPI’s innovative retail and food service ranges are marketed under the “Red Ochre™” brand.  The Red Ochre™ brand is Australia’s only nationally recognised brand of native food products.

Pronounced “Red Oak-er”, it is the name for a striking red clay used by Australian aborigines for body painting in ritual and celebration ceremonies.  It is a powerful symbol of health and happiness.  Red Ochre from coastal cliffs south of Adelaide was used to color the red paint used on London’s early pillar boxes.

Red Ochre™ products are made using all-natural ingredients.  They are highly nutritious, contain Australian native plant ingredients that provide new and exciting flavours, are gluten-free and GMO-free.
