Deep Blue View Restaurant
Or, How to Get From Beverwijk to Bonaire
Menno de Bree and Esther Wiegerink, who owned an operated Premiere, a
restaurant in Beverwijk Holland for 10 years, have taken over management of
The Deep Blue View Intimate Resort on the island of Bonaire in the Dutch
Caribbean.
The young couple sold their restaurant in 1999 and moved to the small island
of Bonaire to enjoy a semi-retirement in the tropics. But after two years of
scuba diving and other ocean sports they decided it was time to get back
into the business of helping others enjoy their free time.
The Deep Blue
View is a perfect holiday location and it is the perfect business for us,
says de Bree, who is also a scuba diving instructor. Bonaire is famous for
its scuba diving and most of our guests come to the island for ocean
activities. So we get to combine our hospitality skills with our favorite
sport.
And I love to make people happy with my food. Cooking is my passion, says
Esther. At The Deep Blue View guests are served a hearty breakfast each
morning on the patio of the small villa. Esther is also a snorkel guide when
she is not busy serving the guests.
We are a very
unique little resort, says de Bree. What we offer is laid-back luxury and
quality relaxation. Some guests have told us it is like staying in their own
private villa. The Deep Blue View has only four guestrooms so there is
privacy and independence for the guests. It is a modern, luxury villa with
the guest rooms opening onto a large private patio on one side and the two
restaurateurs cum scuba divers living in the other section.
In December The Deep Blue View was named "Small Property of the Year" by the
Bonaire Hotel and Tourism Association. This award came after just two years
of operation. Our guests enjoy having a patio, swimming pool, and hammocks
they don t have to share with a hundred hotel guests, says de Bree. There is
also a Bar-B-Q and refrigerator on the patio so guests can grill their own
catch of the day. Or they can have a private happy hour on the patio as they
watch the sun go down behind the ocean s horizon.
Another unique feature of this small inn is the very large telescope that is
rolled out on clear, dark nights. We tell everyone we have a deep blue view
by day and night, laughs Esther. With the telescope guests can see the moons
of Jupiter, rings of Saturn or the great nebula in Orion s belt, sights not
normally seen on a Caribbean vacation.
