Al Roker Cooks Up
The Big Bad Book of Barbeque

Reviewed  by Madelyn Miller

Al Roker is my  idea of a Renaissance Man. He can cook. He can Barbeque. He is funny. He wrote a parenting book.  And now he wrote a cookbook. Add to that the fact that the cartoons in his cookbook are his very own, he does weather for NBC TV Today Show and that he is a TV person on the Food Network.

I just wish he would invite me for dinner. This Texas girl loves Barbeque—and anyone who can cook it. I would even be happy if he invited me to be a taste tester.

Al Roker, NBC-TV Today's weatherman, best-selling author, and self-professed foodie will release his second book, THE BIG BAD BOOK OF BARBEQUE this Father's Day, 2002.  The book, published by Scribner, will be a collection of about 100 recipes from the Roker family as well as classic backyard fare, hot grilling tips, barbeque wisdom, Al's very own cartoons, and plenty of four-color photographs of Al in action with tongs and big spatula.

Roker's book on parenting, Don't Make Me Stop this Car!: Adventures in Fatherhood, which was published in hardcover by Scribner last Father's Day (2001) and spent four weeks atop the New York Times bestseller list, was just released in trade paperback by Fireside.  As follow-up to his first success and as authority in all things "Dad," Roker offers THE BIG BAD BOOK OF BARBEQUE for Father's Day 2002, the unofficial start of the grilling season.

"Father's Day is a good moment in the backyard. The grills are clean and everyone is on their best behavior," says Roker. "Food is such a big part of life, and I hope that THE BIG BAD BOOK OF BARBEQUE adds new fire to the art of hanging out in the backyard with your family and grilling great food."

To correspond with the release of the book, the Food Network will air a new Al Roker special, Al Roker's Big, Bad Book of Barbeque on June 9th.  The Food Network special will take viewers on a "behind the scenes" look at how a cook book is made, as well as cooking demonstrations from Al's favorite recipes, and tours of the country's most popular barbeque restaurants and events, including Memphis in May.

Al Roker is seen daily by six million viewers on NBC-TV's top-rated Today show. In addition, Al produces and stars in three to four specials a year on the Food Network, including "Al Roker's World Championship Barbeque" and "Al Roker's Bahamas Reunion."  He has visited many of America's great barbecue festivals, including Memphis in May and the Cleveland Rib Burn Off. He is involved with the charity for young chefs called the C-Cap Foundation in the Bronx and writes a monthly column for Parents magazine. He lives in New York City with his wife, ABC News 20/20 correspondent Deborah Roberts, and their two daughters.
