Dallas’ Only Place for “Art After Dark”

The MAC

Visual Art Main Galleries:

Creative Solutions, through July 21, 2002.  Creative Solutions is an innovative, alternative arts education program started in 1993 by Young Audiences, Inc. and organized in partnership with the Dallas County Juvenile Department and local arts venues like The MAC. The program pairs at-risk youth with local visual and performance artists in a workshop environment for four to eight weeks. The culmination of this unique collaboration is an art exhibition and theater production in which participating youths display the products of their labor.

Employing art as a positive form of communication, Creative Solutions has served more than 16,800 high-risk youth—providing an opportunity to think creatively, make positive contributions to their communities, and experience success. The MAC is proud to host Creative Solutions for the second year in a row and to foster arts appreciation within underserved communities. Opening receptions: Thursday, July 11 following both the 12 pm and 7 pm Creative Solutions theater performances in The MAC’s Heldt/Hall.

NEW WORKS SPACE:

Through July 28, 2002, Ann Glazer, a Dallas-based artist, pursues a personal narrative through the process of overlapping delicate pieces of cut, black paper into forms that resemble blown-up and distorted snowflakes and reveal constantly changing imagery. Free.

THEATRE

Creative Solutions.  July 11 - 12, 2002.  This collaborative partnership between Young Audiences, Inc. and the Dallas County Juvenile Department partners at-risk youth with local professional performing artists to create a musical theater piece for children.  The MAC is proud to host the Creative Solutions performances for a second year to help foster arts appreciation within underserved communities. Performances are Thursday, July 11 at 12:00 pm and 7:00 pm and Friday, July 12 at 12:00 and 2:00 pm.  Admission is free.  There will be a reception following the noon performance on July 11.

Shut Up and Love Me.  July 16 - 20, 2002.  Karen Finley, internationally known artist whose performance pieces have sparked controversy and acclaim alike, brings her one-woman show to Dallas.   Shut Up and Love Me is a combination of satire, dance, and pure emotional energy, veering wildly between harrowing and hilarious.  Finley performs

An awkward striptease to a disco beat, graphically portrays a woman whose failed romances closely mimic her relationship with her father, and, as a finale, bronzes herself in three pitchers of honey she has poured on a mat in this surprisingly comedic piece.  Performances are Tuesday, July 16 through Saturday, July 20 at 8 p.m.  Tickets are $20, $18 MAC/KERA members and Kitchen Dog Theater subscribers.  Group rates are available.  Call (214) 953-1212.

WORKSHOP

In conjunction with performances of Shut Up and Love Me, Karen Finley will be leading a two-day workshop entitled Solo Performance for Everyone on Thursday, July 18 and Friday, July 19, from 1-4 p.m.  Karen Finley will share her unique methods of transforming personal experience into the expression of art.  On day one, participants will discuss motivations for expression and sources of inspiration and will receive a personal assignment from Finley.  The second day, participants will present their creations and receive feedback from Finley.  The workshop is limited to fifteen (15) participants and costs $100.  Call (214) 953-1212 for information or to reserve a space in the workshop.

The McKinney Avenue Contemporary (The MAC) offers opportunities for experimentation and for the presentation of art in all disciplines, and provides a forum for critical dialogue between emerging and established artists and their audiences.  The MAC supports the artist’s role in society, cultivates that relationship through education and innovative programming, and stands as an advocate for creative freedom.  The MAC has been operated by Dallas Artist Research and Exhibition, Inc., a non-profit arts organization, since October 1994.  The MAC is a member of Dallas Art Dealers Association.
