Couples Head to Aruba to Tie the Knot

Exchange Vows in Paradise!

Aruba, long known as a romantic getaway,  is luring visitors to tie the knot on the island.  Aruba's marriage law became effective on January 1, 2002, allowing visitors 18 years of age and older, to exchange vows in paradise!

"Aruba provides the ultimate wedding experience for couples. Visitors can get married and then honeymoon on the island. Aruba really is paradise found for couples starting out their lives together," said Marcial F. Ibarra, Director of North America for the Aruba Tourism Authority.

Weddings are performed weekday mornings at the island's Town Hall, a Caribbean-Aruban styled mansion built between 1922 and 1925. The hall, adorned with garden walls, was restored five years ago. The mansion was originally a private residence built by Dr. Eloy Arends for his wife. Aruban tradition among the well-to-do families required that on the day of his marriage, a man present his wife with a new and fully furnished home.

Couples wishing to say, "I do" on the island must present a marriage license, an original birth certificate, and copies of passport ID pages for the couple and two witnesses. If divorced or widowed, original certificates are also required. All of these items must be submitted to Aruba's Office of Civil Registry one month prior to the civil ceremony. For those wishing to have a religious service, Aruba provides several exotic settings for the ceremony. A romantic beach setting or a hotel garden provide the perfect atmosphere for couples in love.

Couples who need more information or wish to wed in Aruba can contact the Director of Aruba's Civil Department, Roberto Pablo at 011-297-834400 or e-mail him at pivaruba@setarnet.aw . Brides and grooms-to-be can also check out www.aruba.com for more details and a tour of Aruba's Town Hall.

Aruba is a vacationer's paradise located in the heart of the Dutch Caribbean, 15 miles north of Venezuela and only two and a half hours by air from Miami. Ideally located outside the hurricane belt, Aruba boasts great weather, cooling trade winds and friendly people.
