Maui Surfer Girls

Surfing and Self-Awareness Enhanced
Through Lessons, Clinic and Innovative Teen Getaway

In recent years, women have not only been stealing the scene in traditionally male-dominated sports such as golf, tennis, soccer, and hockey, but are also making a big splash in surfing, with swelling participation among female athletes.  With a Hollywood blockbuster on girl surfers expected to hit theaters this summer, the sport should gain even greater popularity.  Now, women eager to make waves can seek quality instruction from the new Maui Surfer Girls, choosing from surf camps, clinics or private lessons.

Billabong Boarding School at Maui Surfer Girls

The Billabong Boarding School at Maui Surfer Girls is offered twice in the summer of 2002.  The “surf camp” is open to teen girls ages 12 17, and provides two weeks of sun and surf instruction, including support from a Billabong pro, as well as a positive approach to self-awareness.  All levels of surfing experience are welcome.

This year, two sessions will be held, June 20 July 12 and July 21 August 2.  Both will be held in Lahaina, Maui at a beachfront facility facing one of the island’s premier longboard sites.   The two-week retreat, for $2,000, includes accommodations in A-frame cabins, all meals, daily surf practice and instruction (3:1 student-instructor ratio).  Special day activities are also included, such as:  Maui adventure trips, morning yoga, Hawaiian arts and crafts, windsurfing, and more.  Evening entertainment includes movies, talent shows and campfires.  Last year, special evening appearances by well-known surfers included Buzzy Kerbox, Jacqui Zambrano and Woody Brown.

Weekend Wahine Warrior Clinics

Each weekend, year-round, wahine (that’s Hawaiian for ‘female’) ages 8 and above can participate in two full days of surf instruction and Maui adventures.  The program includes gear, transportation and a picnic lunch.

A 3:1 student to instructor ratio is also the average at these clinics.

Workshops cost $250 per person.  Group discounts are available.

Day Surf Lessons

Personalized lessons for individuals or small groups, male or female, can also be scheduled to fit one’s vacation schedule.  Surf sites on Maui are chosen according to participants’ experience.  The $100 per person fee includes two hours of instruction as well as a picnic lunch.  Group discounts are available.

Maui Surfer Girls’ philosophy emanates throughout all three programs.  by director and founder Dustin Tester, formerly an Outward Bound instructor.

“Maui Surfer Girls’ philosophy is more than simply learning how to  surfing, it’s also learning about one’s self gaining insights, recognizing and overcoming limitations.  And we have loads of fun in the process,” notes Dustin Tester, director and founder of MSG.

Those interested in becoming Maui Surfer Girls can receive more information by calling (808) 250-2019, e-mailing mauisurfergirls@wildmail.com  or clicking on to www.mauisurfergirls.com.  Reservations are currently being accepted for the Summer 2002 surf camps.

Maui Surfer Girls is for wahine worldwide, regardless of age or experience, interested in knowing the ocean and discovering themselves in the process.
