The Royal Luau at the Outrigger Waikoloa Beach

By Madelyn Miller

The Royal Lu’au  overlooks the ancient fishponds of Anaeho’omalu Bay —As the sunsets torches are lit on this historic site. A conch shell blows and a traditional Hawaiian chant welcomes guests to The Royal Lu’au at the Outrigger Waikoloa Beach. Witness the opening of the "imu,” an underground earth oven where an entire pig has been slowly cooking all day.  Served with the Kalua pig, the traditional component to this lu’au, are traditional Lu’au dishes and American favorites from salads to tempting desserts.   Following dinner, guests are taken on a lyrical journey through Polynesia with the music and dance of Hawaii, Tahiti, New Zealand and Samoa.

This is one of the best Luaus at one of my favorite hotels in Hawaii.

WHERE: Outdoors on the Luau Grounds at the Outrigger Waikoloa Beach. Convenient valet service or ample free parking is available.

WHEN: Every Sunday and Wednesday evening. Seating begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by a 6:00 p.m. imu ceremony.  Dinner from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and the dinner show from 7:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

WHAT TO bring: Anaeho’omalu is well known for its spectacular sunsets and  cool evening breezes. Aloha attire or casual resort attire is the appropriate dress for the evening. Depending on the time of year, however, a light cover-up is suggested. And of course, don’t forget to bring a camera! But most of all, you need a big appetite and an adventurous spirit to taste all the new flavors.

COST:  $65 for adults, $35 for children ages 6 to 12. Five years and under, free.
