It's Forever Sonny in Palm Springs!

He'll not only be remembered as Palm Springs' most famous politician, but as an entertainment industry genius who gave the world "I Got You Babe," "The Beat Goes On," and the everlasting persona of Cher. Now visitors will forever be greeted to Palm Springs' famous Palm Canyon Drive by a life-sized bronze sculpture of Sonny Bono, the famed celebrity/Mayor/Congressman who died in a Lake Tahoe ski accident in January, 1998. The City of Palm Springs Public Arts Commission and Wessman Development proposed the likeness of Bono, sitting on the edge of a bubbling fountain at 155 South Palm Canyon Drive (Plaza Mercado). Civic leaders, friends, and Representative Mary Bono, who assumed her husband's seat in Congress upon his death, attended the November 16 unveiling. Palm Springs' Emmanuil and Janet Snitkovsky created the sculpture.

Background: Sonny Bono served as Mayor of Palm Springs from 1988 to 1992. During his term he was a driving force in the rejuvenation of Palm Springs and established the world-famous Palm Springs International Film Festival. The statue is Palm Springs' first memorial to Bono. In December, Palm Springs Mayor Will Kleindienst will ask the Palm Springs City Council to rename the terminal at Palm Springs International Airport "The Sonny Bono Terminal Building."
