Hawaii's Big Island Festival
Welcomes Iron Chef Morimoto

Hawaii's Big Island Festival organizers announced today that famed Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto would be a participant in the festival this fall.  Chef Morimoto will present a culinary seminar on Sunday, November 3, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at Hilton Waikoloa Village.

Following the seminar, at 11:00 a.m., Chef Morimoto will host "Hawaii Culinary Stars vs. Food & Wine Magazine's Best New Chefs, 2002" in a light-hearted cook-off event.

The cook-off will pair Hawaii chefs against Food & Wine Magazine's Best New Chefs in a twenty-minute competition.  Utilizing Hawaiiıs Big Island Festivalıs theme of "Mauka to Makai" (mountain to ocean), a bag of secret ingredients, known only to organizers, will be placed at each cooking station.  Chefs must utilize each of the secret ingredients, supplemented by a fully stocked pantry, to create their final dishes.  Three competitions will be held and the audience will serve as final judges, selecting the
winner of each competition, based on showmanship, sportsmanship, use of ingredients and plate presentations.  Morimoto will converse with chefs as they feverishly prepare their dishes, narrating the action for the audience.  It is anticipated that the Food Network will be on hand to film during the week of Hawaii's Big Island Festival and at Sundayıs cook-off.

Born in Hiroshima, Japan, Morimoto trained in Japan under the finest master chefs of that country, perfecting sushi making and Kaiseki cuisine in his own restaurant there.  A desire to expand his horizons and learn more about Western Cuisine resulted in a move to New York City where he spent six years at Nobuıs.

For the past fifteen years, Morimoto has been the star of the "Iron Chef" television program where he has become internationally known for his cutting-edge culinary talent.  In 2001, he debuted his first U.S. restaurant, "Morimoto's" in Philadelphia, a mix of Zen-like design and food mastery.

Morimoto's energy, charisma and talent will be an exciting culmination of Hawaii's Big Island Festivalıs four days of events.  Entry to the Sunday event will be via Festival Pass only.  For pass purchase and other event information, log on to www.BigIslandFestival.com or call 1-866-424-FEST.
