Whale Sightings at The Shops at Wailea

Something to Spout about on November 20th 2002

Ahoy, mates, three beautifully painted whales just breached at The Shops at Wailea! For the first time ever, the whales decided to visit early this year due to the clever partnering of Soroptimist International of West Maui and The Shops at Wailea on Whale Mania Maui, a project that gives shoppers something to admire and nonprofits something to gain. The Shops at Wailea will host a public unveiling of its whales on Wednesday, November 20th just before WOW! Wailea on Wednesdays from 7-9 p.m. in the Lower Courtyard.

Three of the whales commissioned by Soroptimist International of West Maui will be displayed at The Shops at Wailea. Various individuals and businesses sponsored famous artists living on Maui to paint these whales in their talented signature style. These whales are seven feet tall and will stand majestically on solid concrete bases at select locations throughout the center.

Sponsored by Bob and Polly Quatman, the whale "Kohola Reef" was painted by Ray and Diane Pizzo and will be located at the top of the bridge in between Ruth's Chris and Tommy Bahamas. Wyland painted a gorgeous whale to be located in front of Wyland Galleries, which was sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Larry Carelton and Mr. and Mrs. Ian Craig. Jan Kasprzycki painted a graceful whale for the East Wing sponsored by Kentucky Friends of the Whale.

These whales will be displayed throughout The Shops at Wailea, along with other Maui locations, for everyone's delight in the winter season. In March 2003, all whales will be auctioned off at a gala open to the public, giving anyone an opportunity to purchase. The net proceeds from the auction will be donated to many nonprofit organizations, half to the sponsor's choice and half to Maui nonprofits that benefit children, art, education, and the environment.

Come see the whales at The Shops at Wailea!
