Heritage Maintained at this Enchanting Getaway
Rowena’s Inn on the River
By Jane Cassie
Charles Nelson Pretty would be one proud man if he were
alive today. Not that he hadn’t achieved success in his one hundred and
two years of longevity. The fact is, during his life in Harrison Mills, BC,
he owned and operated a timber business that became one of BC’s largest
independently-owned logging operations. In addition to being hard working,
he was also a man with strong family roots and values. The property which
was homestead to his father at the turn of the century remained home to
Charles Pretty until 1992 when he passed away. Taken over by his children,
Ivan Pretty and Betty-ann Faulkner, and with the help of family members and
manager, Leona Holland, the ambiance and charm that Charles valued in his
home still lives on today. Named in honour of their mother, ‘Rowena’s Inn
on the River’ opened its doors in June of ‘95, to offer a first class and
enchanting getaway.
Arriving
in early evening, we were guided toward the English country inn by pools of
light lining the brick driveway. In-laid oak floors, authentic crown
molding, and an heirloom of family photographs grace the foyer and elegant
dining room, where we were warmly welcomed. Inviting aromas confirmed
reports of the fine dining, while candlelit tables before a crackling fire
set the stage for a romantic meal. After a gourmet meal, the ‘Celebration
Room’ offers an elegantly appointed decor and a baby grand in front of a
roaring fire, just waiting to share its melody.
Charm flows throughout this getaway, where paisley
wall-coverings compliment stripes and floral prints, effectively expressing
a bygone era. All five guest rooms boast a collection of fine antiques,
plush terry robes, and soft overstuffed beds plumped with pillows.
Spectacular views of the river, forests and encompassing Sandpiper golf
course are witnessed from varying rooms. Immaculately maintained, the
eighteen holes of golf greenery are picturesquely framed by evergreens and
river banks. Sand traps, water holes and various decorative ponds have been
positioned to challenge even the most talented golf pro.
We enjoyed the soothing sounds of soft classical while
spending quiet reading time in the guest lounge, and later relaxed under the
stars while invigorating jets from the hot tub provided a stimulating
massage. Steam rose from the adjacent seventy-foot heated outdoor pool
where guests could lounge around and enjoy a dip on a hot summer day. A
cheese and fruit platter coupled with a chilled bottle of bubbly was an
enjoyable evening treat and the guest lounge pantry was stocked with a
variety of teas and other hot beverages to choose from.
In addition to the manor’s guest rooms, ultimate
privacy can be experienced when staying in one of the romantic cottages.
Nestled amongst towering cedars the quaint lodgings overlook a nearby trout
pond. Four posters draped with down, and massive stone fireplaces
accentuate warmth of the knotty pine interiors. Sunken whirlpool tubs,
private decks and tranquil surroundings promote the restful environment that
guests come here to find.
We woke to the aroma of fresh-brewed coffee and later
enjoyed a full breakfast in the sun-doused solarium. Raspberry and mango
jam-stuffed muffins, Madeira soaked prunes and pineapple drizzled with a
rum, vanilla and honey syrup, and shrimp scallop scrambled eggs in a
flavourful Thai curry sauce were just a few of the sensational delectables.
Lunch and afternoon tea is also available for visitors and guests.
Later, walking
along the Harrison River bank, we admired the peaceful surroundings of this
getaway haven. So close to city centres and yet idyllically removed from
the hectic pace. That’s what it must have been like for Charles Nelson
Pretty nearly eighty years ago, and if he knew that a piece of his heritage
lived on and still provided enchantment and pleasure to so many visitors, he
would be proud!
