Newest Show Algeria Launches North American Tour in Dallas

Limited engagement begins January 23, 2003

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL has announced that it will present Alegría under its Grand Chapiteau, a dazzling white, state-of-the-art big top, in Dallas to launch its 2003 North American Tour.  This limited engagement begins January 23, 2003 at Fair Park.

Alegría is an internationally acclaimed production that has been experienced by more than five million people since its world premiere in 1994. The Los Angeles Times says, “…incredible athleticism and pure showmanship that rivals anything anywhere.”; and the Chicago Sun Times exclaims Alegría is, “…radiant  with surprises, bedazzlements and images of extraordinary beauty.

A Spanish word for elation, joy and jubilation, Alegría features an international cast of 56 performers and musicians from 13 countries. Alegría has a baroque and operatic style with flamboyant costumes, extraordinary lighting and an elaborate set design enhancing an astonishing spectacle of athleticism and artistry. The result is an impressive mix of skill, strength and speed combined with elegant, almost ethereal performances.

The 2½ hour spectacle showcases breathtaking acrobatics including the dramatically sensuous Synchro Trapeze and the hi-speed, hi-energy Aerial High Bars where daring aerialists fly to catchers swinging more than 40 feet in the air.  Imagine two agile performers who bring alive the Mongolian art of contortion and an artist manipulating flaming knives around his body in a rhythmic and dangerous Fire Knife Dance.

The vibrancy of youth is alive in Fast Track, a brilliant display of synchronized choreography and tumbling achieved through a trampoline system that magically appears from within the set.  In Russian Bars, artists fly through the air with spectacular somersaults and mid-air turns, landing on bars perched on the sturdy shoulders of catchers.

Alegría is the vision of a creative team led by Director FRANCO DRAGONE who in addition to Alegría directed the Las Vegas-based “O” and Mystère, La Nouba at Orlando’s Walt Disney World, Quidam and Saltimbanco. The Alegría team included Creative Director GILLES STE-CROIX, DOMINIQUE LEMIEUX (costumes), MICHEL CRÊTE (set design), DEBRA BROWN (choreography), GUY DESROCHERS (sound design) and LUC LAFORTUNE (lighting), PIERRE PARISIEN (Artistic Director) and RÉNÉ DUPÉRÉ (composer).

Founded in Montreal in 1984 by street performer GUY LALIBERTÉ, CIRQUE DU SOLEIL has been seen by more than 30 million spectators around the world.  Cirque du Soleil, a theatrical blend of circus arts, played out against fairyland sets, washed with magical effects, accompanied by spellbinding soundtracks, is currently presenting seven shows on three continents.
