But isn’t all of St. John off the Beaten Track?
A Travel Companion to Lake Erie Wineries
By D. L. Tadevich
Reviewed by Judy Colbert
If you don’t know a Baco Noir from a Cabernet Sauvignon
but you’re looking for a scenic vacation around Lake Erie, pick up
Tadevich’s Lake Erie Companion book.
She admits from the get-go that she doesn’t have a
sommelier’s wisdom nor is she “qualified to judge these wines except for the
pure pleasure of tasting.” She gives a little Ohio wine history, makes some
basic wine and food pairing suggestions, tells how wine is made (brief
description), and includes a fairly lengthy glossary. No, you may not be
able to admire a wine’s “legs” after reading these sections, but you’ll have
a fairly good idea of what they are if the subject comes up in a
conversation. What you will be able to do is read a wine label and you will
know to spit out the wine you’re tasting rather than drink it, at least if
you’re driving from one winery to another.
Tadevich’s splits the tours into two Ohio itineraries.
The first one starts in Port Clinton, detours to Put-in-Bay, and meanders
eastward to Avon Lake. She suggests three days minimum, four if you’re
planning to island hop. A second tour travels along the Grand River, which
parallels the Lake Erie coastline and concludes in Conneaut. A much shorter
trip, she says this can be done in seven hours (remember, no drinking on
this one—just sipping and spitting).
Included in the book are lush, intoxicating
photographs, maps, detailed directions (go over the bridge and take the
first left), a list of contact information, visiting hours, restaurant
service, most noted wines from each winery, and pages for notes about your
wine tastings. Truly, even if you know someone who really knows the Lake
Erie wineries, you’ll want Tadevich’s book as a companion.
Tadevich has also authored “Wineries of Indiana,”
“Wineries of Michigan” and “Wineries of the Pacific Northwest”
