City’s 10 Best, Worst Restaurants for Solo Diners
When it comes to dining out, four little words can
terrify the steeliest executive or savviest traveler: “Table for one,
please.”
A new guidebook wants to change that. Michael
Kaminer’s new title, Table for One New York City: The Solo Diner’s
Restaurant Guide [Contemporary Books, October 2001], rescues solo diners—and
helps business travelers, tourists, and natives alike make smart dining
decisions. It’s the first guidebook ever geared specifically to solo
diners, and it reflects a growing trend.
Table for One New York City rates restaurants for
friendliness, service, lighting, food, wines by the glass, and comfort—all
from the perspective of the solo diner. In observant, honest, witty reviews
written by a veteran restaurant-goer, Table for One New York City also
reveals what to expect in terms of price, food quality, and clientele. A
“Hall of Fame” and Hall of Shame” also Best of all, the book offers
foolproof strategies to make dining solo a pleasure for anyone.
“For many people, dining solo inspires fear -- fear of
what others will think, fear a restaurant won’t treat them with respect,
fear they won’t be able to fill a long stretch of mealtime on their own. By
proving that a solo meal can be a pleasure, I hope to help overcome that,”
he writes.
Among the nearly 180 restaurants included, from dives
to splurges: Gotham Bar & Grill, Oyster Bar, Mayrose, Elaine’s, Fanelli’s,
La Caravelle, Odeon, Second Avenue Deli, Abajour, Nick & Toni’s, Chez
Brigitte, Payard, An American Place, Brasserie, Next Door Nobu, and many
more.
Michael Kaminer was the restaurant and nightlife editor
for Frommer’s New York for several years. He currently owns a successful
public relations company in New York – and dines solo whenever he can.
Table for One is also available in Chicago and Los
Angeles editions.
