If the Academy Awards Were Held in Dallas,
Who Would the Winners Be?
The Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association voted
the epic fantasy adventure THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING as
the best film of 2003, according to the results of its 10th annual critics’
poll released today.
Rounding out the composite list of the top 10 films of
the year were COLD MOUNTAIN (2), MYSTIC RIVER (3), LOST IN TRANSLATION (4),
FINDING NEMO (5), AMERICAN SPLENDOR (6), IN AMERICA (7), BIG FISH (8),
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD (9) and THE LAST SAMURAI
(10).
For Best Actor, the association named Sean Penn for
MYSTIC RIVER. Runners-up included Bill Murray for LOST IN TRANSLATION (2),
Ben Kingsley for HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG (3), Johnny Depp for PIRATES OF THE
CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL (4) and Paul Giamatti for AMERICAN
SPLENDOR (5).
Charlize Theron was voted Best Actress for MONSTER.
Next in the voting were Nicole Kidman for COLD MOUNTAIN (2), Diane Keaton
for SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE (3), Scarlett Johansson for LOST IN TRANSLATION
(4) and Naomi Watts for 21 GRAMS (5).
In the Best Supporting Actor category, the winner was
Alec Baldwin for THE COOLER. He was followed by Tim Robbins for MYSTIC RIVER
(2), Ken Watanabe for THE LAST SAMURAI (3), Albert Finney for BIG FISH (4)
and Peter Sarsgaard for SHATTERED GLASS (5).
For Best Supporting Actress, the association named
Renee Zellweger for COLD MOUNTAIN. Runners-up included Patricia Clarkson for
PIECES OF APRIL (2), Marcia Gay Harden for MYSTIC RIVER (3), Holly Hunter
for THIRTEEN (4) and Ludivine Sagnier for SWIMMING POOL (5).
Peter Jackson was voted Best Director for THE LORD OF
THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING. Next in the voting were Clint Eastwood
for MYSTIC RIVER (2), Anthony Minghella for COLD MOUNTAIN (3), Sofia Coppola
for LOST IN TRANSLATION (4) and Tim Burton for BIG FISH (5).
The association voted CITY OF GOD as the best
foreign-language film of the year. Runners-up were THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS
(2), THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE (3), TOGETHER (4) and MAN ON THE TRAIN (5).
CAPTURING THE FRIEDMANS won for Best Documentary over
THE FOG OF WAR (2), WINGED MIGRATION (3), SPELLBOUND (4) and TO BE AND TO
HAVE (5).
FINDING NEMO was named the best animated film of 2003.
The award for Best Cinematography went to Andrew Lesnie for THE LORD OF THE
RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING. THE CAT IN THE HAT was voted the worst film
of the year.
The association voted AMERICAN SPLENDOR as the winner
of the Russell Smith Award, named for the late Dallas Morning News film
critic. The honor is given annually to the best low-budget or cutting-edge
independent film.
The Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association consists
of 63 broadcast and print journalists from throughout North Texas. About 70
per cent of the members voted, which considering the difficulties with
screeners this year, was a very large percentage.
