The Romantic Central California Coast

Cambria

By Valerie Summers

Renowned for its beautiful coastline, the Pacific Ocean meets California’s wide sandy beaches until it reaches north to Morro Bay where it dramatically changes to rugged beauty with the ocean crashing against its cliffs.  For a romantic getaway along the coast, my beau and I headed for Cambria and the Blue Whale Inn.  We stopped at Morro Bay for some clam chowder and crab cakes, strolled to the landmark Morro Rock, then climbed over the rocks and boulders which protect the land from the sometimes enormous crashing waves.  We dodged the spray as each wave rolled in and sighted a couple of whales in the distance making their way to Scammon Lagoon.  Piling back into the car, a half hour later, we arrived in Cambria. Although I had visited the area known as an artsy community several times, what came as a total surprise was its hidden coastline along Moonstone Beach.  A one mile wooden pathway edged its way along the bluff where people strolled and overlooking this scene we found our hideaway.

Arriving at the Blue Whale Inn, we were shown to our luxurious mini-suite by its new owners, Cindy and Ray Reynolds.  It was all that we had hoped for….a canopied bed, fireplace, Jacuzzi tub, double sinks,  charming floral décor and an ocean view.  But there was more….gourmet breakfasts, afternoon tea with home made baked goods, wine and hors d’oeuvres at cocktail hour and brandy before bed. The spacious public room, divided into a dining area and lounge, featured a wood burning fireplace, comfortable seating and picture windows all around to catch the ocean views and colorful sunsets.  Starry nighttime skies with the moon reflected on the water provided a romantic bonus.

Our gracious hosts proved most helpful in suggesting places to dine then making the reservations for us.  We enjoyed all their recommendations. They also provided information on the area’s attractions, the main one being the Hearst Castle, just minutes away.  However, we wanted to enjoy the natural beauty of the area so we tooled along the gorgeous drive through the lush mountain scenery along Highway 46, stopping at several vineyards along the way.  Central Coast wineries are plentiful and many produce award winning varieties ranging from Mom and Pop outfits to highly sophisticated operations.  The picturesque Justin Winery had been recommended by several people, so we stopped for a sampling and bought several bottles to take home.

After breakfast each morning we walked along the cliffs and sometimes climbed down the rocks to catch a closer view of sea otters basking in the sun, then explored the tide pools.  A one half hour drive north took us to the viewing area for the hundreds of huge elephant seals sprawled along the beach one mile south of the Piedras Blancas lighthouse. Blue jacketed docents patrolled the area, answering questions from fascinated visitors who lined the pathway.  Again we spotted several whales in the distance spouting their way south.

Returning to Cambria, we strolled through the town of this artsy community, stopping in several galleries to admire paintings, jewelry, statues, photographs and other collectibles.  The mood was congenial and the pace was slow, a perfect setting for a romantic getaway.
