A Little Light Vintage

Whimsical bottles and other glass art for decor and gifts.

By Zel Klotwog

Rebecca Ahumada of Irving, Texas is lighting up home decor. She works with her family and friends to reclaim everyday glass objects, which she then turns into art. Her unique accent pieces are electrified with bunches of tiny incandescent lights and embellished with ribbons, beaded trims and high-quality floral accents such as grape clusters.

Each item is made by hand. Friends and family help Rebecca find glass containers to be recycled or altered. A hole is drilled to allow a string of lights to go in and the electrical cord to remain out. Rebecca brings a sense of humor to her one-of-a-kind work, since the thinner glass of a wine bottle doesn't always make it through the drilling process. Rebecca gets a close look at each bottle when she cleans and prepares them for drilling, yet even as she dreams of artistic possibilities, she well knows that not every bottle will survive.

Rebecca enjoys the reception that her light displays receive at North Texas craft fairs and other events. She already has ideas for new kinds of glass projects which she plans to offer in the future. Her most common projects to date are glass blocks, wine bottles and lamps made from wine bottles. The finished product doesn't skimp on the details but doesn't go over the top: even her whimsical light boxes with bows let the idea shine through without clutter. She trims and stains her own lampshades by hand.

These wine bottle light fixtures would make a lovely accent by your home wine display or could be a perfect gift for your favorite oenophile (wine lover). The next time someone asks if you have a light Cabernet Sauvignon or Barolo, you just might be able to say "yes!" if you have one of these electrically-lighted bottles on hand.

You can purchase Rebecca's creations by telephone order at (469) 853-9762. Her wine bottles sell for $20, glass blocks for $25, and lamps start at $40. The domestic shipping and handling charge for one item is usually $10 and multiple items usually ship for $15. International shipping is available.
