Statue Unveiled in Alsace, France on July 4

On July 4th, in an official celebration of liberty and freedom, the city of Colmar, in the Alsatian region of France will unveil the largest replica of the Statue of Liberty, climbing nearly 40 feet high.  This momentous event will mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, the Statue of Liberty’s sculptor, who was born in Alsace.

The inauguration ceremony, highlighting France and America’s shared value of liberty, will be attended by French, American and European dignitaries including Bernadette Chirac, the wife of the President of France, the Secretary General of the European Council, the French Minister for Foreign Trade and the Consul General of the United States.  The French and American anthems will be sung following the ceremony to demonstrate the lasting bond that Lady Liberty has formed between these two countries.

Throughout 2004, numerous activities are planned in Alsace to commemorate the life and works of Auguste Bartholdi.  Among them are the International Music Festival, July 2-14, which features Jessye Norman and pays tribute to American musicians and an exhibit at the Bartholdi Museum in Colmar lasting though September 5.  For more information, please visit www.tourisme-alsace.com.
