Luscious Melons Here

By Madelyn Miller, the travellady

This is not an ad for a topless bar. It was a sign at a preview party for Urban Market in Dallas, which offers produce that is so juicy it is almost titillating.

This is Downtown Dallas’ first grocery and café. And as a downtown resident, let me tell you, we needed it. Shopping in 7-11 doesn’t lead to gourmet meals. Buying to go meals at real restaurants gets real expensive.

The owners’ goal was to provide downtown residents and workers a complete grocery, as well as a café serving all three day parts - breakfast, lunch and dinner. And there’s also a wine bar for after-work enjoyment!

The much-anticipated 20,000 square foot market, housed in the historically significant Interurban Building, features fresh seafood and meats, dairy products, fresh produce, bakery, deli, salad bar, beer and wine, party goods, health and beauty products and of course, pet food!

The café includes a dine-in counter, java and juice bar, quesadilla bar, as well as a wine and beer bar. Grab-and-go foods, as well as home replacement meals, are available for take-out.

Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, Urban Market is open from 6am to 10pm Monday through Friday; and 8am to 10pm Saturday and Sunday.

It is not that hard to find Urban Market, but you might not trip over it. It is one block south of Neiman-Marcus with the entrance to grocery on Browder and entrance to parking garage on Jackson.

The second level of the adjacent parking garage will be dedicated to free parking for café and grocery patrons. An additional 14 on-street spaces on Wood Street are available for take-out customers.

While there is no dress code, you might want to wear something a little more upscale than your usual supermarket clothes. Trendy people shop here.

Urbanmarket, 1500 Jackson Street, in the Interurban Building, Downtown (214-741-3663 or urbanmarketdallas.com).
