Savvy Gourmet Introduces Cooking Classes for Kids with the Launch of Camp
Gumbo
In a city with a rich culinary history and world-renowned
cuisine, one would expect New Orleans to have at least one camp for kids with
the culinary arts as its sole purpose. Until now however this camp did not
exist in the Crescent City. So by popular demand, the Savvy Gourmet happily
introduces Camp Gumbo - a week-long cooking camp for children 6 to 13 years of
age. Running August 14th - 18th and broken down into 2 sessions with a morning
session (9:00 - 11:30am) for kids 6 to 9 years and an afternoon session (1:00 -
3:30pm) for those 10 to 13 years, the objective of Camp Gumbo is to provide a
healthy, educational and entertaining program for children to acquire skills in
the areas of food preparation, cooking and kitchen safety in a state-of-the-art
Viking kitchen.
Taught by local mom and chef Jeanea Bandi (also known as
“the Uptown cookie lady”), the hands-on learning environment-- a
state-of-the-art Viking kitchen- at Savvy Gourmet is a perfect setting for
aspiring young chefs (or those kids who just love to cook) to gain fundamental
culinary knowledge in a fun yet structured atmosphere. “I am thrilled to be
involved with such a worthwhile and rewarding camp for children. We are long
overdue for a culinary program like this to be made available to the public in
New Orleans,” stated Jeanea Bandi.
The curriculum of Camp Gumbo explores foods and heritages
from several different cultures through class instruction and palate taste
education with a particular emphasis on the cultural and culinary heritage
“gumbo” of the city of New Orleans. Parents are invited to attend the
30-minute, final extended session of the 5-day camp in which traditional Creole
and Cajun dishes familiar to the campers and parents alike will be prepared and
served by the children demonstrating their new-found culinary skills and
expertise. “Camp Gumbo is just the first of several programs for children we
plan on launching this year in our efforts to share and cultivate our passion
for food and the culinary arts with all New Orleanians young and old,” remarked
Peter Menge, co-founder Savvy Gourmet.
The cost to enroll in Camp Gumbo is $225 per child, which
includes 12.5 hours of classroom instruction, the 30-minute finale parental
event, all food products, use of an apron and a binder with recipes to create a
personal recipe book. Class size is limited to 20 children per session and is
on a first-come, first-served basis. All campers must be fully registered no
later than August 11th. In order to be fully registered, payment in full and 2
executed forms (registration and parental permission) must be submitted by the
August 11th deadline. The forms and payment are available and can be processed
both in-store or on-line at
