Second Time Around: A Wedding To Remember

Edited by Jennifer L. Price

Many young girls dream of fairy tale weddings, complete with big wedding gowns, a bevy of bridesmaids and groomsmen, and the ceremonial cutting of the cake. But for the growing population of divorced couples who have found love again, the "Been there, done that" philosophy has prevailed. Couples often wonder if it is appropriate to celebrate, with children involved and a lot of money to be spent; the overwhelming decision is "you betcha." "Why would someone not want to celebrate their last wedding?" remarks Mindy Smith, Director of Food & Beverage at Ponte Family Estate Winery.  The older and wiser brides agree that a beautiful wedding day is the right choice and the perfect way to begin a new life together.

What brides retying the knot lack is time, which is why many brides find the Ponte Family Estate so appealing. You are surrounded by mature vineyards and lush gardens; onsite coordinating is available, taking a big responsibility off the shoulders of the bride, and of course, there is delicious cuisine and wine.  Encore brides will often forgo the church ceremony, opting instead for the outdoor setting of the winery and writing their own vows. Second weddings seem to be smaller and more intimate, so the romantic Barrel Room at Ponte Winery is the perfect choice for the reception. The enticing appearance and aroma of aging oak wine barrels sets the mood for celebrating a stylish soiree and is very romantic with candles placed on the barrels around the perimeter of the room, and on the guest tables. A stunning and refined look.

Couples will spend a larger part of their budgeted funds on flowers and live music, rather than party favors and chocolate fountains. It's more about the look and feel of the celebration than trying to live up to childhood dreams. Then after the event, the honeymoon is more about a family vacation, including all the kids. Out is the mandatory sister-in-law bridesmaid, as she is replaced with children or a very close friend. No $5000 wedding dresses are required, as a stunning champagne-colored gown or flowing pant suit is more fashionable. The mature bride has no interest in tossing the garter or bouquet; instead an "Anniversary Dance" takes place to celebrate a long and healthy marriage. Traditions that seem sweet for a 20-year old bride are less suited for a mature bride.   The first dance between the bride and father is often not considered an option, but an endearing dance with a son, or daughter is.

The food and high-quality wine is also a very important element. The Winery Chef has created specially selected menus that appeal to encore brides and provide many choices of Filet Mignon, fresh fish, lamb, and gourmet stuffed chicken. A wedding cake is often nonexistent or only a small representation is present. Instead, beautifully presented desserts are requested.  You have the option of mini desserts with such treats as chocolate covered strawberries, fresh fruit tarts, mini éclairs and petit fours.

A kiss is still a kiss… encore brides are just a nervous as a first time bride when the big day finally arrives. The sweet satisfaction that you have found the "man of your dreams" and that you are making a commitment to him is just as magical the second time around and Ponte Winery can help make it beautiful.
