22nd Annual Kapalua Wine & Food Festival

Showcases an Elite Field of World-Class Vintners

By Madelyn Miller

Some people count the days until Christmas. I feel the same way about the Kapalua Wine Festival. I am going back again this year and feel it is like an annual gift that I give to my palate.

More than 20 world-class vintners from Napa Valley, Sonoma, Russian River Valley, Washington State, and France will gather for the 22nd Annual Kapalua Wine & Food Festival July 10-13, 2003.  Host and Master Sommelier Andrea Immer hand-selected this elite selection of wines to feature at this “Flavor Map of the World: Charting a Course for Great Taste.

Immer—who is also Dean at The French Culinary Institute in New York City and author of the recently released GREAT TASTES MADE SIMPLE—has created wine and culinary seminars, themed tastings, and dinners focusing on different flavors from around the world.  Joining Immer are nationally renowned sommeliers Karen King (Union Square Café, New York City), Master Sommelier Alpana Singh (Everest, Chicago), Bobby Stuckey (formerly of The French Laundry, Napa Valley), Master Sommelier Larry Stone (Rubicon, San Francisco), and Master Sommelier Fred Dame (Paterno Wines International).

The more than 20 featured winemakers will participate in a variety of food and wine events throughout the four-day celebration.  Kicking off the event will be The Grand Tasting, which will showcase world-class bottlings from featured wineries, for an alfresco sampling of more than 150 wines.  Themed wine tents will include “World of Bubbles,” “New American Classics,” “European Classics,” “East Meets West,” and “The Best of Russian River Valley.”  In addition, guest sommeliers will share their favorite selections at the “Sommelier’s Choice” tent.

Designed for both novices and wine aficionados alike, wine seminars will feature a Ruinart champagne vertical; tasting of premier vintages from the acclaimed Russian River Valley growing region; and Old World / New World tasting comparing the old world classics with the same grapes grown in the new world.  There will also be cooking demonstrations with guest chef Ming Tsai, host Andrea Immer, rum mixology seminar with master mixologist Dale DeGroff, hands-on sushi making with famed Hawaii Chef D.K. Kodama, and artisanal cheese tasting with cheese guru, Steve Jenkins.

New to the event this year will be a Hawaiian Gala Luau featuring Hawaii’s native food and culture presented in an upscale environment.  Rounding out the event will be the signature Kapalua Seafood Festival, combining the bounty of the Pacific as prepared by 16 of Hawaii’s hottest chefs with wine selections by Immer.

Winemakers attending this year’s event will include Mike Grgich of Grgich Hills, John Conover of Plumpjack Winery, Bob Cabral of Williams Selyem Winery, Dan Goldfield of Dutton Goldfield Winery, Rod Bergland of Joseph Swan Vineyards, Jeff Stewart of La Crema Winery, Merry Edwards of Merry Edwards Wines, Patrick Melley of Russian Hill Winery, Greg Lill of DeLille Vineyards, Jean-Phillipe Moulin of Ruinart, Michael Scholz of Wattle Creek, Robert Sinskey of Robert Sinskey Vineyards, Don Patz of Patz & Hall, Craig Williams of Joseph Phelps Vineyard, and Susie Selby of Selby Winery.

A four-day festival pass is priced at $750 and includes admission to all events. Selected tastings, seminars and signature events may be purchased separately. Special festival rates are available at Kapalua’s luxury accommodations, the Kapalua Bay Hotel & Ocean Villas, The Kapalua Villas and The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua.  For pricing, tickets or more information, call toll-free 1-800-KAPALUA or visit the web site at www.kapaluamaui.com
