Arizona Detours
Detours. The best way to travel in Arizona
By Madelyn Miller
Just like a sex partner, who you go with matters most
when you are traveling.
The right guide knows all the right places. He knows
where and when to stop. And he can answer all your questions and anticipate
your needs.
It helps if he has a sense of humor, and is happy to
lift heavy suitcases like mine.
And on a recent trip to Arizona, I was lucky to have
taken a tour with DETOURS.
Both drivers, Larry and Jeff, made the trip twice as
much fun.
Larry noticed when we had a difficult traveler, and
shielded the rest of us from her as much as possible. He was part diplomat,
part psychiatrist. And he is a walking encyclopedia about the area.
But what made Larry so unforgettable to me was when I
asked for “a cowboy” to fill the empty seats, he produced not one, but two!!
at our next meal stop.
When I asked how he did it, he
confessed, he had bought them both a drink at the adjoining and asked them
to come to join us when they finished their drink. How many tour guides
would think of that?
Jeff, who is one of the owners, also seemed to handle
the most unusual requests with style and grace. He knew the best places to
take photos and which roadside vendors had the best deals on Indian arts and
jewelry.
I loved Arizona. And I know it was largely because of
Larry and Jeff.
DETOURS TAKES FUN SERIOUSLY
Here are there travel rules that are posted in the back
of each seat
D E T O U R S 10 Rules of the Road
1. HAVE FUN!!!
2. If you’re not here, you’re late.
3. If you’re late, we’ll pick you up on the next trip!
4. DON’T pee on the tires – we DO make pit stops.
5. If the driver shouts “left”, everybody shift to the left side of the van.
6. If you get car sick, use your own shoes – I need mine!
7. We don’t need your gas; we provide our own.
8. Back seat drivers sit in back, ALL the way back!
9. If the road gets too scary, do what the driver does – CLOSE YOUR EYES!
10. SEE RULE #1.
DETOURS' vans have been customized with THE guests in
mind. They have only 10 leather captains' chairs in a spacious 15 passenger
van, giving you plenty of room to stretch out. And the vans recline more
comfortably than airline seats.
WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH
When the roads get rough, they can safely and smoothly
take you and your group "OFF THE BEATEN PATH" to exclusive backcountry
destinations. That matters because many of the best sights in the Southwest
are not on paved roads.
