A Suite Retreat in the Big Bay

San Diego’s Newest Travel Destination

By Sherri Meyer

Humphrey’s Half Moon Inn and Suites may have spacious rooms, stunning views, mouthwatering cuisine and stellar landscaping, but it’s the big name entertainers that perform here from May through October, that draw thousands of music loving travelers to Humphrey’s each year.

Humphrey’s is a unique, romantic retreat located off-the-beaten path on beautiful Shelter Island. Shelter Island is in "The Big Bay," San Diego’s newest travel destination.

It’s the perfect year-round destination for a 1-day mini vacation, weekend getaway, vacation, wedding, anniversary, honeymoon, birthday and the list goes on. If you are seeking fun, relaxation or romance, this is the place.

San Diego’s near perfect climate makes anytime a good time to visit. However, the best time is from May through October during the summer concert series.

Humphrey’s Concerts by the Bay, is an intimate Shelter Island venue right on the waters edge, surrounded by palms and framed by the America’s Cup Harbor, Sand Diego Bay and Humphrey’s own private marina. It will accommodate more than 1,200 people and showcases some of the greatest entertainers in the world.

A few of the hundreds of great entertainers that have performed on Humphrey’s outdoor stage include: Willie Nelson, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bill Cosby, Doobie Brothers, Ringo Starr, Whitney Houston, Vince Gill, Wynonna, Jimmy Buffet and Chicago.

Spectacular live music can also be enjoyed year-round at Humphrey’s Backstage Lounge, which was voted "San Diego’s best live music club." Kick up your heels to the sounds of jazz, blues, reggae, funk and R&B.

What makes this romantic island resort so unique is that guests can wine, dine, catch a concert and sleep in one place. In fact, unless you plan on leaving the island to see other sights in the San Diego area, there is no need for a car.

There are scores of other things to do without leaving the island.

Run, or walk on the three miles of picturesque waterfront paths, which are just a stones throw away from Humphrey’s. Rent a bike from Humphrey’s and explore the island. Work out in the on-site fitness center, or take a swim in the gigantic heated pool.

For relaxation, you can treat yourself to a soak in the inviting spa, your favorite cocktail at the poolside bar, a nap on the beach, or a personalized massage. The possibilities are endless.

The rooms are spacious. Even the smaller rooms, are an ample 450 square feet. They are almost as big as my house (no kidding).

Many of the accommodations offer patios or balconies, with "knock your socks off" views of the San Diego Bay, Humphrey’s private marina, or the dramatic city skyline. Other rooms offer views of the lush, tropical water gardens.

Amenities such as wet bars, data ports, complementary newspapers and free shuttle service to and from the San Diego Airport are included, as well as the usual amenities offered in most hotels.

Gaze at the picturesque marina through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the waterfront restaurant, while you feast on mouthwatering meals featuring California Coastal Cuisine.

Humphrey’s serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, brunch, or you can opt for a dinner show combo.

Even though Humphrey’s is located off-the-beaten-path, it’s only minutes away from other local attractions in The Big Bay and beyond. If you are staying at Humphrey’s for a few days and you get "island fever," here are a few other places to visit and things to do nearby.
