Cocinar Mexicano?

A Cooking Adventure in Mexico

By Marty Martindale

“A breakfast table outside overlooking the valley -
Occasional "allelujas" from the church below -
Chopin playing quietly in the background.
TEPOTZTLAN is a magical village -
Our posada magnificent with gorgeous flowers and terraced gardens.
A "drop dead beautiful" panorama out our posada window -
The village is nestled in a valley -
Surrounded by high, jagged cliffs.
On a hill just two cobble-stoned blocks above the town.
An enchanting monastery and church.”

Cocinar Mexicano participants live in the picturesque village of Tepoztlán, an hour's drive from Mexico City, where they enjoy luxury accommodations in the

POSADA DEL TEPOZTECO where terraced gardens overlook cobbled streets and the town’s famous open-air market.

Market baskets in hand, students shop each morning for the fresh ingredients to prepare for FULL MENUS. The group cooks each morning in beautifully appointed local kitchens and feast each afternoon on their own dishes. Chef Marta García, of the acclaimed El Ciruelo restaurant, is lead instructor.  COCINA DIRECTOR,  Magda Bogin,  provides simultaneous translation during INSTRUCTION. Guest chefs also take part during classes. Each evening students dine in local restaurants where they sample the fare of other cooks.

Excursions to nearby museums, ample leisure time for relaxing at the Posada and optional RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES include swimming, hiking, adobe sweat baths and massage, a complete experience which promises an unforgettable experience in one of Mexico's officially designated 'magical villages'.

SOME NOTES FROM FORMER STUDENTS:

“… This remarkable PROGRAM  combined a beautiful location, high level teaching skills, simultaneous Spanish/English translation, a fine kitchen facility, and lots of tender loving care.”

Blyth & Russ Carpenter, Eugene, Oregon

“ … No one with a zest for learning Mexican cuisine should miss this.  The entire program has a wonderful balance of time for classes, exploration and relaxation set in a magical village that leaves you wanting to make another visit immediately.”

Lili Rollins, Alameda, California

“… Not only were the techniques well delineated, the recipes themselves were a creative and knowledgeable extension of the traditional, with never a "false note". Magda also made sure that the attendees had a wonderful time outside of the classes, too, from first-rate accomodations to interesting excursions and a cross-section of restuarants both here in Tepoztlan and in Cuernavaca.”

Julie Charlot, Tepoztlán, Mexico

… I loved the week, learning to make great things, using terrific ingredients, watching Marta cook, working alongside Tere and everyone else. I loved being introduced to the market on the first day, instead of puzzling about what the foods were. I liked the mole-lesson (I think of those two ladies cooking it for 3 days), and then coming back to taste how different it was after all that cooking. Being out-of-doors all the time in your terrific kitchen was wonderful!
