Ladies, Don’t Let the Sports Book Steal Your Man

Edited by Madelyn Miller

With the NCAA Basketball Championships just around the corner, women everywhere are preparing to be left alone - cast aside as men turn their attention to the testosterone-packed action. For at least those first four days and the 48 edge-of-your-seat games that kick-off the basketball event of the year, sports-minded men will be glued to the screen. Many will take a trip to Las Vegas, to their favorite sports book, to soak up the excitement with a few of their best buds, beers in hand. So what’s a girl to do? Why join in the fun of course! Don’t get left behind just because you feel like you don’t belong. Here’s an expert who can help ladies learn more about the sport, so they’ll look smart, sexy and cool in “The Book.”   The perfect way to pick up a guy! MGM MIRAGE Race & Sports Book Director, Robert Walker gives the inside scoop.

Top Ten Things a Girl Needs to Know to Survive a Weekend in the Sports Book

1.      The Book - The sports book, call it “The Book.”  It’s where you place your bets and hang out to watch the game, and they can only be found in Las Vegas.

2.      Favorites & Dogs - Favorites are teams the odds say are supposed to win the game, while the Dogs (underdogs) have the odds against them.

3.      Point Spread - The predicted scoring differential between two opposing teams as set by the sports book.
4.      The Money Line - The odds expressed in terms of money.  A minus (-) means you lay down that amount of money to win $100, and a plus (+) means you win that amount for every hundred dollars wagered.
5.      Ticket - Your bet.  When you wager money in the book, you receive a printed receipt referred to as your ticket.
6.      Total - The combined number of points two teams will score in a game
7.      Juice or Vig (vigorish) - The commission the sports book takes on a single wager.
8.      Cover - When a favorite wins by more than the required number of points.
9.      Push - All bets are refunded when a game lands exactly on the wagered point spread.
10.     Nickel & Dime Bets - Wagers of $500 & $1,000
