Pine after Wine at the Philadelphia Wine Festival

The upcoming Third Annual Philadelphia Wine Festival slated for May 1 through May 5th, 2005 promises to be bigger and better than ever. Sponsored jointly by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board and Philadelphia Magazine, the festival will celebrate a top-of-the-line pairing of wine and food, bringing 125 of the world’s premier winemakers to Philadelphia for a lush offering of gustatory events. The program includes a new series of celebrity chef seminars, over 37 Wachovia Winemaker Dinners at leading restaurants across the region, the showcase Grand Tasting, and the new Sterling Vineyard Food and Wine Seminar Series, presenting master chefs in an intimate participatory setting. Tickets are still available for many of the Winemaker Dinners and Master Classes and Seminars.

The Sterling Vineyards Food and Wine Seminar Series offer two days (May 1 and 2) with Philadelphia’s top chefs and wine educators in the Viking Culinary Arts Center of Bryn Mawr PA, one of the region’s most glorious culinary environments. Master classes will be held in the Viking kitchen with such renowned Philadelphia chefs as Marc Vetri, Joseph Poon, Delilah Winder, and Walter Staib. Other seminars will be held in the center’s theatre, evoking a television studio setting and featuring luminaries such as the Ritz Carlton’s Terence Feury, Noche’s (and formerly Windows on the World’s) Michael Lomanaco, and pastry wizard Patrick Gauthron of Aux Petites Delices. As sponsor of this year’s events, Sterling Vinyards will present a huge selection of Sterling vintages; there will be cheese and charcuterie provided by DiBruno Bros. in addition to tasting samples provided by the chef. Tickets are $25 per person, and can be purchased exclusively at 215-781-7700. The complete list of Master classes and Seminar events can be found at www.phillymag.com.

Two evenings of 37 celebrity Wachovia Winemaker Dinners will showcase the region’s premier restaurants in prix-fixe, multi-course wine and food pairings. Select dinners will host a wine auction to benefit the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, this year’s Festival beneficiary. A list of participating wineries and restaurants can be found at www.phillymag.com. All reservations, appearances, seating times, and prices must be confirmed with each participating restaurant.

The Philadelphia Wine Festival Grand Tasking on May 4 will give wine lovers a magnificent opportunity to discover new varietals and vintages. The special guest chef is Chef Masaharu Morimoto, famed for his exciting performances as the “Silver Iron Chef” on the Japanese-produced television program Iron Chef aired nationally on the Food Network. Also featured at the Grand Tasting are hors d’oeuvres to complement the pouring selections, a silent auction of wine-related items, and the opportunity to purchase wine at the special Wine & Spirits Premium Collection Store.

The Grand Tasting features the largest selection of the world’s preeminent wines to date, and launches the Commonwealth’s first true statewide wine celebration—WINE WEEK ’04 will include not only festivities in Pittsburg (May 6) but also the first Central Pennsylvania Wine Festival in Harrisburg (May 5). Information regarding the Harrisburg events may be found by calling 717-214-ARTS or visiting www.centralpawinefestival.com.
