Bet You’ll Enjoy This Comedian in Reno
Paul Rodriguez & Yo Qiero Comedy Jam
Laugh along with the "Original Latin King of Comedy"
and three up-and-coming Latino comedians
Reno, Nevada Just in time for Downtown Reno's Cinco
de Mayo celebration, it's a grande serving of spicy Latin comedy, with the
return of Paul Rodriguez & Yo Quiero Comedy Jam on Saturday, May 8 at 8 pm
in the City Center Pavilion. The Comedy Jam will include performances by
three additional comedians hand-picked from the comedy club circuit by
Rodriguez himself. This special engagement is brought to you by Circus
Circus Reno, Eldorado Hotel Casino, Harrah's Reno and Silver Legacy Resort
Casino.
Named "2003 Comedian of the Year" by Sacramento Bee
reviewer Mel Shields, this well-rounded comic has honed his stand-up for
more than 22 years and has made well over a million people coast-to-coast
laugh with his live performances.
The star of six HBO comedy specials, Rodriguez is an
entertainer with talents that include acting, directing, writing and
producing. Recently he was the executive producer and star of the comedy
concert film "The Original Latin Kings of Comedy." The special, which aired
on Showtime before its 2003 DVD release, also starred Cheech Marin and
George Lopez.
Rodriguez has also appeared in more than 29 films,
including "Blood Work" with Clint Eastwood, "Made in America" and "Tortilla
Soup," as well as numerous television series and specials. Despite the many
roles that he plays as an entertainer, stand-up comedy is his highest
priority. "I consider movies and television the part-time job," said
Rodriguez. "My job is doing stand-up. It's a high, like a drug addiction.
Even when the money wasn't nice, it felt good. If someone's paying you
$30,000 or $30, I just like doing it."
Rodriguez was born in Culiacan, Mexico but at the age
of two his family became migrant farm workers in the United States.
Traveling all over the country as his family followed the crops, he
developed a sense of humor that helped him make friends in the many schools
he attended throughout childhood. After serving in the Air Force, Rodriguez
entered Long Beach City College on the GI Bill where he earned an associate
of arts degree. With the intention of becoming a lawyer, he attended
California State University in Long Beach. During an elective theater
course, his comic wisecracks prompted his acting teacher to take him to the
Comedy Store in Los Angeles for "Amateur Night." The club's owner offered
him a job working the door and the opportunity for nightly stints on stage
usually at one or two in the morning. From there, Rodriguez began to
develop his act at comedy clubs throughout California and soon became the
opening act at major concerts, colleges, clubs and comedy showcases
throughout the country.
Rodriguez was recognized as one of America's best
comedians when he got his break doing comedy warm-up for Norman Lear's show
"Gloria." Lear immediately wrote and developed a weekly series for him
called "a.k.a. Pablo."
Although the series was short-lived, it was honored by
the Smithsonian Institute as the first show about a Mexican-American family
to be broadcast on mainstream television. The show also served as a
launching pad for Rodriguez, who has gone on to develop a successful career
that has kept his film, television and live audiences laughing for more for
than two decades.
Ticket prices for Paul Rodriguez are $55, $44 and $33;
tickets will be available Thursday, March 18 online at tickets.com and
