Unhappy Hour

Edited By Madelyn Miller, the travellady

Dallas painter Joey Seeman has a solo exhibition of new paintings entitled The Unhappy Hour at the Magnolia Bar Gallery, located inside the Magnolia Theatre in the West Village, 3699 McKinney Avenue in Dallas from February 25 through April 7, 2005.

The art is available for viewing during regular theatre hours.

Joseph Seeman has been documenting the denizens of the night time world since he started painting in the early 90’s. Scenes of all-nighters, hopeless alcoholics, barflies, chain smokers and assorted hangers on have long populated his canvases. It is these ever present fixtures who give hole in the wall bars their character and charm.

Usually, the images would take their first form in sketch books, or more commonly bar napkins. “There’s a never ending stream of beautifully decrepit souls wandering the bars of America at three in the afternoon” states Seeman. “Having lived in a bar neighborhood like South Beach really opens your eyes to a different type of person, the type who arrives for their first Happy Hour at 8:00 a.m.”  Derived from years of sketches and cocktail napkins, The Unhappy Hour is Seeman’s attempt to rekindle the ghosts of those he’s encountered throughout the years and channel their spirit onto canvas while paying homage to the great artists of the German Expressionist period whom he reveres.

Pigeon Stone Project at the Magnolia is located upstairs in the Bar Gallery.  Bringing together both artist and community, it is the intention of Pigeon Stone Project to spotlight local talent and to help build a stronger foundation in Dallas’ art scene.  Sarah Jane Semrad is curator of Pigeon Stone Project at the Magnolia.
