A Texas-size salute to the official state dish will be served up at the 30th Annual Prairie Dog Chili Cookoff and World Championship of Pickled Quail Egg Eating on Saturday, April 9, 2005 at Traders Village in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Dozens of chili cooks from throughout Texas and several neighboring states will be entered in this year’s competitions.

And I get to be a celebrity judge.

I have never wanted to be on a reality show. This may be as close as I get to the Fear Factor.

Years ago, I was a judge at the Texas State Fair. It was my job to taste cookies, cakes and pies . (I always volunteered for desserts, never vegetables) I thought it was the best job I ever had..until some little kid made cookies with a cup of salt and a teaspoon of sugar. And I had to chew and sallow them. It was NOT like salt water taffy.

One year I went to a Chili cookoff and the winning entrant had raisins. Everyone asked how they thought of that unusual ingredients. Their son dropped his box in while they were cooking, the winners explained.

Who knows what people will drop into their chili in the Prarie Dog Chili Cookoff.

On Saturday, cooks from 8 to 18 years of age will hone their budding culinary skills in the Junior Division cookoff. At the same time, the adults will be warming up for the chili competition. In the Chili Division there will be 10 Place Winners with the First Place Winner taking away $1,000 CASH. First Place Showmanship will also receive $1,000 Cash. Featured again this year will be the Ranch Style Beans International “Toxic Vapors” Bean Eating BLAST . . . a violent release of confined energy usually accompanied by a loud sound and shock waves, that result from contestants participating in a timed bean eating contest. Other Saturday contests are: Head to Head Banana Racing, always popular Lemon Roll and Team Tortilla Toss Contest.

The World Championship of Pickled Quail Egg Eating Contest is always a crowd pleaser. Contestants will be trying to see how many of these hard-boiled gourmet delights they can consume within the 60-second time limit. This event has been the subject of many a tall tale, as well as being featured on many television shows, such as: “The Spectacular World of Guinness World Records”, Fox Networks “Glutton Bowl” and was featured last year on the Travel Channel’s “top ten” list and aired as part of its “World’s Best” series. The Traders Village Pickled Quail Egg Eating Contest chomped in at #5 of the Top Ten all-time great eating contests. The Championship Pickled Quail Egg Eating Contest will pit 12 participants against each other for the 2005 crown, and a part of the $600 purse.

While chili cooking is the main purpose of this celebration, having fun is the underlying reason for participating. Zany chili and team names, inventive costumes, elaborate cooksite setups, and audience involvement by teams all ensure the public shares in the good times.

This Traders Village event has become, over the past twenty-nine years, a “must” stop on the chili cooking trail. Many ‘chiliheads’ can trace their first attempt at cooking a bowl of red to this Grand Prairie event. This event brings together families, friends, and fun. So, if you’ve never been to a full-blown Texas Chili Cook Off, now is the time, at the Traders Village version of a great Lone Star Tradition. It is a “must” see event for the whole family.

Traders Village is located at 2602 Mayfield Road in Grand Prairie, off Highway 360, or one-mile north of I-20. The market is open every Saturday and Sunday, there is no admission charge and parking is only $2.00 per vehicle. For info call, 972-647-2331.
