Sleep On A Pier In Pacific Beach, CA
By Susan Norton
Since
1927, those in the know, looking for a seaside holiday, steal away to the
Crystal Pier Hotel, a unique family owned pier, lined with 28 Cape Cod cottages,
and located just north of San Diego. Now, the word is out! There isn’t anywhere
else on earth that you can sleep on a pier, listening to the ocean splash
against the shore right under you. Also, since the pier is constructed to sway
with the waves not fight against them, you are virtually rocked to sleep in the
arms of King Neptune, not to mention the refreshing, sloshing sounds of surf on
sand.
Each
private bungalow consists of a living room, fully equipped kitchenette, bedroom
and private deck. Walk outside, inhale the sea air and glory in the coastal view
all the way from Mission Bay to La Jolla. Feel the muscles in your neck uncoil
with each deep breath. It’s a great place to paint a picture, write a poem, read
a book or take a nap.
The
beach is flat and perfect for a therapeutic stroll, and there is a concrete bike
and walking path that runs for miles. Meander down the coast, enjoy the warm sun
and the seashells that wash up on the shore, and if you look closely out to sea,
you can see the local surfers or an occasional pod of dolphins. They tend to
swim in pairs. Even dolphins need buddies!
If you walk east on Garnet Avenue (the street that dead
ends at the pier), you’ll discover the Zanzibar Coffee Company. You can order a
focaccia crust pizza with chicken, Feta cheese and Kalamata olives or other
wonderful breakfast or lunch items. Everything is divine! Afterwards, take a
walk along the beach path to absorb the atmosphere and the pizza. Then amble
back to your cottage to experience your first night of sleep on a pier, a once
in a lifetime experience.
There
are plenty of restaurants along the beach walkway, but you might want to make
reservations for dinner one night at the Lamont Street Grill. It is continually
given a first rate recommendation by the locals and is well deserving of its
praise. Located in a Cape Cod cottage with a charming patio decorated by
twinkling lights and a fountain. Its atmosphere is quaint, intimate and
congenial. First, your waitress might bring out a complimentary hors d'oeuvre of
artichoke, cream cheese and roasted garlic in a wonton wrap. For dinner, such
specialties might be pork loin over fettuccine with snow peas, broccoli,
carrots, red cabbage and roasted potatoes. Dessert might be coconut sorbet,
served in a coconut shell with chocolate dipped pieces of pineapple. The food is
exceptional and quite reasonably priced.
Another fun place for breakfast or lunch is Cafe 976, a
small bungalow with a charming wrap around porch that looks out on a
flower-laden garden. Their curried chicken sandwich is delicious! Right next
door, treat yourself to an old fashioned bakery, Devany's Pastries. Load up your
car or carry-on with tasty treats before you head on back to your real life from
your magic sleepover on a pier.
