Guitarmageddon: Reason to Sing the Blues?
Guitar Center is preparing for the launch of its initial
King of the Blues competition in search of the country’s top undiscovered blues
guitarist, the first competition of its kind on a national scale.
After flying under the music industry’s radar for decades,
the blues are again on the map of popular music and culture. In fact, over the
last few years contemporary music has produced several top acts with
blues-driven sounds such as the White Stripes, the John Mayer Trio, Kanye West
and the Black Keys, among others. This recent rise in popularity is due largely
to young musicians and music fans who now, more than ever, recognize that the
blues rock. More mainstream musicians are playing blues-based rock, and as a
result, the blues are again connecting young musicians and fans to music’s
roots.
With first round competitions held at more than 160
locations throughout the U.S., the King of the Blues competition launches in
March. Regional finals will be held in major cities such as Los Angeles,
Chicago, Houston and New York City, and caps off at the Chicago Blues Festival
in June where BB King will perform at the competition finals.
This competition provides a direct example of the blues’
influence on today’s youth culture and will bring together thousands of
America’s guitarists of all ages, races and backgrounds to showcase how they can
speak the blues – and to determine who, in fact, is the King of Blues. Might it
be you?
