Cure the Winter Blues in Chicago

Edited by Jennifer L. Price

Chicago is not really known as a top winter destination, but Ritz-Carlton Chicago’s Chef Concierge, Jon Winke, has used his 32 years of experience to create a list of Chicago’s “Top 10 Winter Warmers in 2007.”

“Chicago’s a great destination in the winter,” says Winke.  “You just need to be imaginative in how you spend your time here.”  So, follow his advice and cure your winter blues by enjoying the following:

1.  Try "Bowling With a Twist" at 10Pin as you stay warm with a martini in one hand and a bowling ball in the other. Watch music videos and sporting events on their high-definition video wall supported by a nightclub audio sound system.

2. Visit the newly re-opened Chicago History Museum. Wander through galleries and discover all of the legendary Chicago stories, from the Great Fire of 1871 to Riverview Park to the renowned rivalry between the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox.

3. Head to Millennium Park's ice skating rink, a healthy, entertaining way to warm up. Rental skates are available and the rink is open daily from 10am-10pm, through March 16.

4. Shop The Magnificent Mile with a selection of stores like no other city has to offer in a one-mile radius from Michigan Avenue and Oak Street south to The Chicago River.  Ask for our special shopping map that details the stores.

5. Take a break with The Ritz-Carlton Chicago’s Homemade French-style Hot Chocolate, made with Valrhona Pur Caraibe chocolate and heavy cream, served with homemade marshmallows, chocolate sugar cookies and whipped cream. Bring the kids to The Greenhouse and they’ll sip on a children’s version with mini blue and pink marshmallows.

6.  We’ll secure your special admission tickets to The Art Institute’s exhibit, Cézanne to Picasso (February 17—May 12, 2007). Visit our neighbor, The Museum of Contemporary Art and view MCA EXPOSED: Defining Moments in Photography, 1967-2007 (February 24 - July 29, 2007).

7. Head south to Museum Campus. Stop in The Shedd Aquarium and view The Oceanarium Beluga Whale exhibit and Wild Reef shark exhibit. Pop into The Field Museum of Natural History, say hello to "Sue", the world's largest and most complete T-Rex and visit the exhibit, Treasures of the Titans (through June 3, 2007).

8. Don’t miss The Museum of Science & Industry’s controversial sequel exhibit, Body Worlds 2 (through April 29, 2007). Advance ticket purchase is available at www.msichicago.org  and recommended.

9. Celebrate fireworks set off from Michigan Avenue at the Chicago River, every Saturday night at 9:30 p.m. through March 3, weather permitting. Best view is from Pioneer Court at 401 N Michigan where the first 1,000 spectators will receive holographic viewing glasses.

10. Indulge in the Saturday Night Cupcake Buffet  in The Greenhouse of The Ritz-Carlton Chicago, served Saturday evenings from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., and complemented by live jazz. The pint-sized cakes are baked from scratch each Saturday afternoon in The Ritz-Carlton Chicago pastry kitchen and guarantee to tickle your tummy.

High atop Water Tower Place, just an elevator ride away from over 200 shops, the Ritz-Carlton Chicago, managed by Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts, recently was awarded the 2007 Mobil Travel Guide Five-Star Award and 2007 AAA Five Diamond Award.  For more information, visit www.fourseasons.com/chicagorc.
