MMMMMMMonica’s

By Cynthia Ward Cooper

On my many trips between Austin and Dallas, I’ve passed through the Hill Country city of Georgetown numerous times. I’d never thought of it as a place for food other than a quick fast food stop. Until now.

Monica’s 701, which opened in November 2003, is good enough to make Georgetown a destination in and of itself. Located prominently on the square, it’s a welcome addition to the local dining scene.

On a recent evening there, we began with the Basil Pesto Torta, a tasty terrine containing layers of sun-dried tomatoes, pesto, and cream cheese topped with pine nuts and accented with shallots and garlic. Their take on the ubiquitous spinach-artichoke dip was similarly fresh; served Mediterranean style, with chevre, crackers, and vegetables. We happily nibbled on tiny calamata olives and spooned apricot chutney over the dip.

Monica’s signature salad, with its combination of strawberries, pecans, and blue cheese, might sound unlikely, but it’s well worth a taste. The maple vinaigrette was a perfect complement.

The seafood lasagna was absolutely superb. A complex dish that few restaurants manage to do well, it consisted of shrimp, scallops, and crab layered on pasta with spinach and smoked mozzarella and topped with a brandy basil cream sauce.

The dessert selection was nicely varied. We tried the Baked Apple Tart, a delicious version made with premium ingredients, and the White Chocolate Bread Pudding, which was delicious.

Our waiter was very knowledgeable and didn’t hesitate to make recommendations.  Given that Monica’s has nearly 100 different wines on their list, his knowledge was most impressive.

Restaurant dining is more than just good food. Atmosphere and service are important components of the experience, and Monica’s delivered on all counts. The dark wood décor was warm and attractive, and quiet enough to encourage conversation. The upstairs bar and patio were equally inviting. They have live jazz music on Saturdays, and I can’t imagine a better venue.

Located only 15 minutes from North Austin, Monica’s 701 is a perfect destination for a romantic dinner or celebration.
