GenoaThe Capital of European Culture is the hot place to be this summerBy Madelyn Miller While most people look forward to the beach in the summer, my idea of a perfect afternoon is wandering through an air-conditioned museum, absorbing a little culture instead of the sun’s rays.
Right now I am planning a trip to Genoa, the European Culture Capital. Research has helped me find ways to save on seeing it all at a value price. Details on the GeNova04 Card are below.. They say sun ages your skin. But in Genoa, one of the things I most want to see is a piece of art that has aged well. Mandylion. Intorno al Sacro Volto.
With the Sacro Volto or Mandylion, housed and venerated for over six centuries in the church of San Bartolomeo degli Armeni, Genova not only possesses one of the most ancient images which have come down to us from the Byzantine world, but also an object undeniably tied to the historic events of the city from the late Middle Ages to the modern era. The Mandylion is an impression of the face of Christ, given by Him to King Abgar of Edessa, where it was venerated for centuries, and then transferred to Costantinoples in the year 945, to be given in the late 14th century to the Genoese doge Leonardo Montaldo. In the monastery of Saint Catherine on the Sinai are two doors painted in tempera from the year 945 that, in size and other details, correspond to the Genoese Sacro Volto, and show King Abgar in the likeness of Constantine VII Porphirogenitus, the emperor of Byzantium, receiving the Mandylion: more than a thousand years later, the Sacro Volto is reunited with the ancient doors from Mount Sinai in Genova. Following the journey of the Mandylion from Jerusalem to Edessa, Costantinoples and finally Genova, the show also presents all the precious objects found inside the case with the Sacro Volto, including some reliquaries from Byzantium and famous 11th- and 12thcentury illuminated manuscripts that illustrate the history and legend of the image.
