Although I'm not a proponent of perpetuating food and
wine pairing, sometimes there are wines that speak to a particular cuisine
or season. For me, the wines of Dr. Konstantin Frank, from
Hammondsport, NY, almost evoke the feelings and flavors of the Holiday
season. It is for this reason that I’ve chosen to dedicate an entire column
to the finely crafted wines of this benchmark, Finger Lakes winery,
including its second label, Salmon Run and its sister sparkling wine
facility, Chateau Frank.
CHATEAU FRANK
1999 Brut $$
This is, without a doubt, one of the finest sparkling wines made in the
United States. Creamy and yeasty, fashioned very much in the French
tradition, this light, effervescent wine is a no-miss pick for brunch,
cocktail hour or any celebration.
DR. KONSTAINTIN FRANK
2002 Chardonnay $
A lovely, high-acid interpretation of the most popular of white grapes, the
wine offers a parade of flavors including pears, apples and vanilla and just
a tease of sweetness.
DR. KONSTANTIN FRANK
2003 Johannisberg Riesling Semi-dry $
This rich, honeyed nectar is East Coast Riesling at its most luscious. A
beautiful wine to sip with a simple biscotti or olive oil cake, it is also a
Holiday-worthy accompaniment for turkey with all the dressings.
DR. KONSTANTIN FRANK
2002 Gewurztraminer $$
An absolute delight, Frank’s Gewurztraminer offers a very alluring spice,
mixed with floral aromas and a hint of licorice and citrus.
SALMON RUN
Chardonnay $
A flirty rendition of America’s favorite white grape, the Salmon Run
Chardonnay is a wine that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Well-priced,
the wine offers generous fruity aromas and flavors.
SALMON RUN
Riesling $
Dr. Frank is a winery with a grasp on Riesling’s every mood. This rendition
is light with just a hint of lingering sweetness mixed with tart, bright,
fruit flavors.
DR. KONSTANTIN FRANK
Ripe with plum flavors, yet rounded out by a nip of acidity, this is an easy
East Coast drink at a very fair price.
DR. KONSTANTIN FRANK
2002 Cabernet Sauvignon $$
A surprisingly rich and complex wine, one would never guess it was produced
in the cold climate of New York’s Finger Lakes. Old World in style, it
blends biting acid with weight that positively coats the tongue and a
lingering finish that smacks of caramel and cinnamon.
DR. KONSTANTIN FRANK
2001 Pinot Noir $$
Celebrate this velvety sipper created from the oldest Pinot Noir vines in
the State of New York. Complex and elegant, its many layers smack of all
those flavors we love in fine Pinot, from violet flowers to wild
chanterelles.
