Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR

By Rita Cook

I was the envy of all my friends and even some strangers as I pulled in at the various stores, restaurants and nightclubs in this Mitsubishi Evolution.  It’s a four-door, but it behaves like a two-door and it can even hold up to five passengers (I know because I tried it).  There is the RS, the IX and the MR edition with the latter being the top-of-the-line.  While everyone wanted to drive it this was my chance to make ‘em all jealous and show them that I knew how to drive this car as good as any “boy.”

You will also find this car equipped with revised front and center differential limited-slip devices and side-impact beams that are lighter weight.  All wheel drive is standard and big Brembos fit the bill as well.

Interior looks good too for those style-conscious drivers and expect aluminum touches and a comfortable wheel albeit a racy grip will make you feel like Speed Racer.  Even for a girl like me this car found the best spots in traffic and let me drive it to my heart’s content never missing a beat and hugging the road like a baby.

What to Know: The MR edition, which I drove comes with a 2.0-liter, 286 horsepower, turbo engine and a six-speed manual transmission is the norm in this baby.  A few of the newer options are the BBS aluminum wheels and a vortex generator found on the roof.  Otherwise, it looks like the old tried-and-true Evo from years gone by, but hey, that’s not so bad since this car was never hard on the eyes anyway.

Miles Per Gallon: Clocking in at 19 miles per gallon in the city and 25 miles per gallon on the highway, it’s not bad for a car that makes just about everyone green with envy.

Price Tag: Really reasonable at $35,000.
