Mobile Bay Welcomes Two Exhibits in 2007: “A Day In Pompeii” And “Captive
Passage”
Mobile Bay, Alabama, will welcome two fascinating museum
exhibits in early 2007: “A Day in Pompeii” and “CAPTIVE PASSAGE: The
Transatlantic Slave Trade and the Making of the Americas.” These two traveling
exhibits enhance the selection of permanent museum exhibits at the city’s 12
museums, with topics ranging from the city’s maritime history to its
African-American roots.
“A Day In Pompeii” makes its first stop in the United
States at the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center from January 12 to June 3,
2007. The exhibition is rich in discovery and human drama, and it is considered
a first, as no such artifacts have ever left Pompeii before. The exhibit
features photomurals and architectural elements recreating Pompeii’s bustling
street scenes and beautiful villas. Hundreds of authentic objects excavated from
the ancient city – including gold coins, jewelry, room-sized frescoes, marble
statues, baking ovens, fishing gear, and many other pieces – that tell the story
of daily life in Pompeii will be on display. The last section of the exhibit
shows the human cost of the disaster as it features eight plaster casts of
residents who failed to escape, including a man clutching cloth to his mouth and
a couple embracing as they fell. Pompeii remains one of the most complete and
intact archaeological sites in the world today, and now Mobile Bay will have a
chance to experience the ancient city’s culture first-hand.
“Captive Passage: The Transatlantic Slave Trade and the
Making of the Americas” arrives at the Museum of Mobile for an exhibition on
display from February 7, 2007 through September. Created by The Mariners’ Museum
in Newport News, Virginia, the exhibit is unlike any display the Museum has ever
hosted. “Captive Passage” is a compilation of over 200 extraordinary objects and
images from The Mariners’ collections and others around the world that tell the
story of the slave trade from a maritime perspective. The exhibition is a
compelling historical and human presentation that portrays a story each of us is
bidden to share, whatever our race or heritage.
