KONA OLD STYLE NAMED NEWEST WINNER OF GEVALIA KONA COFFEE CUPPING
COMPETITION
Edited by Madelyn Miller, the Travellady
I watched in suspense as the judges of the 2007 Gevalia
Kona Coffee Cupping Competition pondered the beans Although this is not as
exiciting an event to watch as a football game, the results are no less
important to the competing coffee growers. This is the superbowl of Kona Coffee
and the award is much coveted by growers.
Una Greenaway and Leon Rosner, owners of Kona Old Style,
took first place at the 2007 Gevalia Kona Coffee Cupping Competition held at
Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort.
Kona Old Style is located on 2.5 acres in
Kealakekua at the 2,200-foot elevation. Kona Old Style is certified organic by
the Hawaii Organic Farmers Association for 30 years and its coffee trees are 100
years old.
I am completely surprised and amazed at our 1st time win.
Our flavor is affected by being pesticide and herbicide free. 50% of our farm is
shade coffee which accounts for the mellow flavor, expressed Una Greenaway,
owner, Kona Old Style.
President, WholeCup Coffee Consulting LLC, Sherri Johns
commented, What distinguished todayıs winner from all the coffees as a stand
alone coffee is that it had a sweet key lime, dipped in honey and jasmine floral
notes. This coffee had crisp and clarity, itıs tasting had multi-dimensions.
Second place was awarded to Malia Ohana located in Keauhou
mauka, owned by Malia Bolton. Third place was awarded to J.Yokoyama Farm located
in Kealakekua, owned by Robert McDonald.
66 Kona coffee farmers submitted entries into this year's
Gevalia Kona Coffee Cupping Competition. The blind-taste competition, held
Wednesday and Thursday, was sponsored by Gevalia Kaffe. Fifteen entries advanced
to today's final round.
Judges included Gevaliaıs Master Taster and Panel Chairman,
Willy Pettersson, Shunta Baba from Japanıs UCC Ueshima Coffee Company, Ltd.,
world-renown coffee expert John King with Harold L. King & Company and Sherri
Johns, President, WholeCup Coffee Consulting LLC.
Each coffee farm submitted a 50-pound sample from which
five pounds were actually entered into the cupping competition. To be eligible,
the coffee submitted must have been harvested in Kona.
The Gevalia Kona Coffee Cupping Competition is a blind
tasting. Once the entry is accepted, it is simply assigned a number to protect
its anonymity. These numbers are changed midway into the cupping, between the
preliminary and final rounds, to keep the judges' palates alert throughout the
competition.
The coffee samples, both green and roasted, are placed on a
long table for the judges to independently evaluate. The judges look for high
marks in these six categories: fragrance, aroma, taste, nose, aftertaste and
body.
