Glenmor at Gleneagles

A home from home - in any season

By  Louise Farquhar

The Gleneagles Hotel is famous around the world for the stunning scenery, impeccable service, understated luxury and superb facilities that draw discerning travellers there year after year.  Perhaps to reward these loyal visitors or to attract new customers the award winning 5 red star resort and member of the ‘Leading Hotels of the World’ has added something a little special to it’s 850 acre estate. Nestling discretely in the heather moorland, only minutes from the main hotel, is Glenmor - the new seasonal ownership programme.

Specially created by award winning architects, the Unwin Jones Partnership, this development of 50 splendid homes together with an exclusive clubhouse offers customers a new concept in holidaying at Gleneagles. The traditional style houses are set in their own private grounds around two picturesque lochans with interiors that encompass the ultimate in style, comfort and amenity for guests- whenever they choose to stay. The special feature of Glenmor is the seasonal ownership factor whereby owners can buy into Gleneagles by purchasing a specific amount of vacation time every year at the time that suits them best, ensuring they can always holiday at the resort when they want to.

Seasonal Ownership - How does it work?

Owners can choose either 7 or 28 night tenures that run on a 55-year lease and effectively allocate them that amount of time in the home they have chosen each year. The occupancy purchased is treated as a heritable asset, which can be gifted or passed on to heirs. The format does have similarities to timeshare but has avoided many of the problems associated with that type of property ownership by maintaining exclusivity within the resort. Gleneagles are effectively pioneering this method of owning a second home in a resort of this calibre. Unlike other resort development the hotel group has retained the management role of Glenmor to preserve the quality of service that is enjoyed throughout the resort. There is a facility to swap weeks with other owners if an allotted time does not suit one year or the house can be rented out, with any rentals co-ordinated through the hotel to ensure the quality of guest is maintained. Prices for Glenmor range from £9,900 to £44,700 dependant on the size of property and season chosen. A typical management fee of £850 to £1050 is due every year to cover essential repairs and interior finishes and is vetted by an owners committee. Although currently in an embryonic stage with only a small portion of the development complete, the response has been phenomenal. £1million of time has already been sold with Christmas, New Year and the Ryder Cup weeks selling fast.

The Homes

Glenmor is an intimate development of 50 homes built in the customary Scottish style with steep, slate roofs and pale rendered walls patched with stone. Magnificent Scots Pine trees stand like sentries protecting the precious red squirrels and deer that forage in the woodland below. Maintaining the environmental equilibrium was an important aspect of the project for the Glenmor team. Specialist landscapers, Gillespies, ensured that the heather moorland was protected and nurtured during the construction process and indigenous trees, such as birch and rowan, were planted where possible.

Once through the solid wood entrance doors the traditional aesthetics outside give way to ultra-modern interiors designed by Amanda Rosa, who is a recipient of the prestigious Andrew Martin International Designer of the Year Award for her work at Columbus in Monaco. Rosa has a flair for creating a sleek, minimal look, which effortlessly combines with comfort and luxury. Glenmor is a testament to this style. The layout of the houses is a little conventional following the usual format of bedrooms on the ground floor and an open plan kitchen, dining and living area on the first floor opening out on to a large terrace. However the design does work well here, with spectacular views over the estate on offer from the upstairs windows and terrace, which is perfect for alfresco entertaining.

Owners can choose from 2, 3 or 4 bedroom homes, all of which are furnished to the highest standard and infused with the mellow tones of amethyst, sage and rich chocolate found in the surrounding Perthshire countryside. Each property comes with a glossy kitchen fully equipped with granite work surfaces, stainless steel cladding, American style freestanding fridges and wooden units. Utility rooms are discretely tucked away to store muddy golf shoes and clean up after a day salmon fishing on the Tay. Bedrooms have double en-suite shower rooms and the additional master ‘bathing room’ is certainly the place to relax and soothe tired muscles - and it’s big enough for two! The obvious features such as the grand fireplace in the lounge, sumptuous sofas and armchairs, leather dining chairs, crisp linen bedding and soft carpets make you feel special, but it is the unseen practical elements such as under floor heating, dimmer lights, heated bathroom mirrors and individual control sound systems that provides guests with the unique home-from-home feeling at Glenmor. In essence these homes can be whatever you want - a place to relax with the family, a base for sport and adventure, an exquisite oasis of luxury or a top-quality venue to entertain business clients.

The Resort

Gleneagles has won numerous awards including the Conde Nast ‘European Resort’ 2001 and is Scotland’s flagship hotel complex. In 2014 the prestigious Ryder Cup will take place on the world famous championship golf courses. It is served by the Gleneagles railway station and is only an hour in the car from Edinburgh or Glasgow.

All hotel facilities are available to owners at Glenmor including free use of the Country Club, preferential rates at The Spa, Equestrian Centre, Falconry School, Off-Road Driving Centre, Shooting School and Fishing School. Perhaps most attractive, however is the golf. One adult is provided with complimentary green fees on all 3-championship courses and the Golf Academy for the duration of their stay, with other guests enjoying privileged resident rates. A crèche and children’s club is available for families and free mountain bikes come with each home.

The private clubhouse, when constructed, will offer light meals and refreshments to Glenmor residents as will the many other restaurants and bars in the resort. Of particular note, however, is the relatively new additional to the Gleneagles dining experience, namely ‘Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles’. This Michelin starred dining room is very private and considered to be the best restaurant in Scotland by many leading critics. It is a must during any visit to Glenmor.

Glenmor - the ultimate vacation

Peter Lederer, the Managing Director at Gleneagles, believes that “Glenmor is an opportunity to own your own home on the resort’s estate in the season of your choice and for the weeks you wish - a golf break with friends in May, a family holiday in August or a quiet retreat to pamper yourself in January…The Gleneagles Hotel and Glenmor sit alongside the world’s most luxurious resorts being developed…we are proud to be at the forefront of extending the barriers of the leisure industry worldwide”.

In essence, if you are a regular customer at the Gleneagles resort or an astute traveller looking for a vacation haven year on year, Glenmor offers the opportunity to stay in your own private house on the estate - where you can enjoy the personal space, comfort and peace of your own home and still have all the amenities of the resort on your doorstep. Imagine a guaranteed holiday in a world-class resort every year without any of the hassle of owning a second home. Sound appealing? Glenmor may be exactly what you need!
